Summer Teacher in the Park

Gateway National Recreation Area is seeking one, full-time summer teacher contractor. The contractor must be a current New York City teacher. The position will support the National Parks initiative that seeks to ensure every student and their family has the opportunity to experience their federal public lands and waters, with a special focus on under-resourced communities.

 

Due to local restrictions and guidelines considering the public health crisis caused by COVID-19, the NPS Initiative seeks to build virtual park-based experiences through various technologies and multimedia platforms. The ideal candidate will have experience using online streaming programs (Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, etc.), along with other multimedia platforms to create engaging and informative content that can be shared on the park website. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an education plan to best engage park users of all ages and should expect to follow and build on the plan throughout their six-week tenure. The Summer Teacher will report to the NPS Education Supervisory Park Ranger at Gateway. The teacher will work at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island (must be able to provide your own transportation) but will have the option to telework when available. The teacher should be highly motivated, creative, possess a positive and can-do attitude, be easily adaptable, excited to learn new things, and have the ability to multi-task.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creation of synchronous and asynchronous, curriculum-based, education material to be added to the park website (based on your subject area expertise)
  • Evaluation of existing education programming and suggest improvements
  • Creation of an education plan for Gateway National Recreation Area

 

Qualifications/Skills

  •  Current teacher in the greater New York City area
  • Master’s degree
  • Understanding of curriculum development and implementation
  • Creativity, energy, and commitment to excellence; professional demeanor and attitude
  • Experience or interest in parks and environmental education
  • Familiarity with online conferencing platforms (Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, etc.)
  • Experience with creating engaging lessons for a diverse audience
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a group
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially in areas of cultural competency, and an ability to deliver positive, constructive, and honest feedback, both written and verbal
  • Have transportation to work at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island
  • Ability to work remotely to be able to achieve goals/tasks by deadlines

 

Term

Six weeks (240 hours) from June – August (start date flexible), term must be completed by August 31, 2021.

 Weekly hours will not exceed 40 hours per week. Schedule: Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend work may be required.

Salary

A stipend of $6,000 will be paid at the end of the term of duty.
