Engineering is one of 19 Career and Technical Education pathways in DCPS. The Engineering program exposes students to the fundamentals of design techniques, drafting, digital drafting and rendering, which all culminate in a senior capstone project of original design. The complete Engineering pathway includes electives of Digital Electronics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering. These courses which equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in the industry and their postsecondary path be it college, career, or both.
Engineering courses lay the foundation using AutoDesk Inventor and AutoCAD design software. The teacher must be proficient in using the AutoCAD products, with preference given to those who are certified. The teacher must also be certified by Project Lead The Way to teach their curriculum, so training must be completed prior to teaching each course if the candidate is not already certified. Prior industry experience within Engineering is preferred, especially Mechanical or Civil.
The Teacher will report to the Principal.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.
• Incorporates technology daily while teaching AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor, and Project Lead The Way.
• Prepares students for AutoCAD certification exams.
• Facilitates capstone project completion for students’ Project Lead The Way certification.
• Highlights the pathways to working in the industry and daily responsibilities in the industry.
• Arranges industry exposure opportunities for students such as field trips, guest presentations, job shadow experiences, internships, etc.
• Establishes and maintains positive contact with multiple organizations related to Engineering.
• Coordinates with the DCPS Career Education team to order equipment, maintain accurate inventory, and align curriculum to the appropriate standards.
• Supports and encourages students to enter and compete in local and national Engineering competitions.
Sets and reinforces clear expectations and routines that are aligned with the school’s overall vision.
• Develops and implements curricula and activities to meet academic standards.
• Thoughtfully plans daily lessons and implements specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary.
• Demonstrates strong content knowledge.
• Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and diagnoses areas of student misunderstanding.
• Uses assessment data to refine curriculum and informs instructional practices.
• Be accountable for students’ academic growth and increase each individual student’s achievement. Creates a positive, achievement‐oriented learning environment.
• Reflects on successes and areas of growth as a teacher, seeks to improve performance, and responds to feedback. Participates in collaborative curriculum development, grade‐level activities, and school‐wide functions.
• Invests parents and families in their children’s academic success through regular communication.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil or a related Engineering field.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Two or more years of industry related experience preferred
• Enthusiasm for and demonstrated mastery of content area and AutoCAD and AutoDesk Inventor.
• Certified to teach Project Lead the Way courses, or willing and able to attend professional development to become certified prior to, or during the first year of employment.
• Certified in AutoCAD or willing and able to become certified within a year of employment.
• Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
• Possesses or is eligible for a valid District of Columbia Teaching License.
• Meets Highly Qualified status as defined by the NCLB mandates.
• Strong instructional skills and classroom management.
