Under the direction of the Chief Counsel of the Office of the Director Legal Unit (OD-Legal), and the Assistant Chief Counsels, Attorney IIIs represent the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations, the Department, and division chiefs and managers in a wide and interesting variety of subject areas that are within the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Department. Attorney IIIs generally have mid-level experience, and are expected to independently handle a caseload, to have solid lawyering skills, and to have some level of subject matter expertise in or more areas of the Department's responsibility.


Duties may include but are not limited to:

Representing the Department, Director, or Administrative Director of the Division of Workers' Compensation in all Anti-Fraud Unit matters, including but not limited to provider suspension and special lien adjudication matters;

Representing the Department, Director, or one of DIR's divisions in civil and writ litigation, including litigation involving constitutional issues;

Representing the Director of DIR in workers’ compensation cases involving special funds administered by the Director;

Providing analysis and advice concerning Public Records Act requests;

Analyzing and drafting proposed legislation;

Serving as a Privacy Officer and advising the Department with respect to privacy and confidentiality issues;

Providing legal services with respect to contract matters involving the Department;

Drafting proposed regulations; and

Providing legal services on a wide variety of other issues that may arise in the operation of the Department.


This is a full-time, permanent position. The hours are usual business hours Monday through Friday. Attorneys are expected to work all hours as necessary to accomplish their assignments, and although they will generally average a 40-hour week, longer work hours may occasionally be required. There is some flexibility as to the specific work schedule, which will be determined after hire in consultation with the Chief Counsel and/or the Assistant Chief Counsels.


Effective July 1, 2020, State employees are subject to a 9.23% salary reduction in exchange for up to 16 hours of the Personal Leave Program 2020 (PLP 2020) per month. Special Requirements

The SOQ should be typed in 12-point font, with 1.5 or double-spacing, and be no more than two (2) pages in length.


Questions to be answered in the SOQ (please copy and paste these questions into your document):

1. Briefly summarize your prior experience in civil or administrative litigation, including with respect to the subject areas in which you have practiced, the courts or other forums in which you have practiced, the responsibilities you have handled, and the extent of your law and motion, trial, and/or appellate experience.


2. Briefly describe two significant matters you handled that you feel demonstrate your skills and accomplishments as an attorney. Include a brief summary of the matter, and explain what it is about the results, outcome or circumstances that you feel reflects well on your abilities as an attorney.


3. Have you ever written any briefs for filing in the California Court of Appeal, California Supreme Court, or any federal appellate court? If so, please provide an estimate of the number of state and federal appellate briefs you have authored. If you have been counsel in any cases resulting in published opinions, provide the case cites.
