Bilingual (Spanish) Housing Specialist / Constituent Liaison

Description: The NYC District Office of a New York State legislator is seeking a bilingual Housing Specialist / Constituent Liaison to assist constituents living in all types of housing including but not limited to NYCHA, Section 8, rent stabilized, rent controlled, HDFC Coops, and Mitchell Lama housing. The role requires comfort and expertise in navigating complexities of New York housing systems, strong problem-solving skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills and an ability to engage with constituents from a wide variety of backgrounds. The role will also include responding to a broader range of local constituent concerns, as needed. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Securing rent subsidies for constituents including ERAP, SCRIE, DRIE, and One Shot Deals
  • Assisting tenants threatened with eviction including (e.g. for nonpayment of rent, holdover cases)
  • Advocating for tenants navigating conflicts with landlords (e.g. repairs, lease issues)
  • Supporting NYCHA residents address individual and systemic issues
  • Reviewing leases for errors (e.g. rent overcharges, failures to credit security deposits)
  • Educating constituents in rent-controlled units on Tenant’s Rights and advocating for their rights
  • Case management and connecting to benefits such as Public Assistance and SNAP
  • Assisting constituents to resolve concerns and navigate government services, as needed  


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in constituent services or other public facing case work role
  • Knowledge of the laws governing tenant rights (e.g. Rent Stabilization Laws, Fair Housing Laws, HUD)
  • Familiarity with programs and organizations dedicated to housing support (e.g. One Shot Deals, tenant advocacy organizations)
  • Spanish speaker strongly preferred
  • Experience in a local, state or federal government office is a plus, but not required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for daily interaction with tenants and colleagues
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to respectfully engage with constituents from diverse backgrounds


Job Type: Full or Part Time. The position is located in New York City. No travel will be required. Occasional evening and weekend work. New York State is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
