The Presidio Trust is seeking Park Educators to join the Heritage Program at the Presidio of San Francisco – a 1,500 acre national park with a richly layered history and landscapes that includes wildlife, native plants, archaeological sites, the only campground in the City of San Francisco, and historic military buildings animated by more than 3,000 residents and 200 companies. As part of the Presidio Trust, an innovative federal agency created to save the Presidio of San Francisco as a park, the Heritage Program shares the park’s rich natural and cultural heritage through public engagement, working collaboratively with community organizations and park partners, including the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, to promote awareness, appreciation, and protection of this unique American resource.
Our ideal candidates are passionate about teaching K-12 students using place-based program strategies to connect youth to the archaeology, history, and natural and cultural environment of the Presidio. You possess experience in informal or formal education practices and you’re knowledgeable about conducting successful field trip experiences for Bay Area schools. You’re excited to engage Bay Area youth, teachers, and families with the many resources and programs offered by the Presidio Trust. You’re highly organized, enjoy working collaboratively within a team environment, and can also work well independently, providing high quality, unique national park experiences that inspire and empower future generations.

- Deliver predetermined pre K-12 education programs for students, teachers, and families in order to promote resource awareness, appreciation, protection, and youth engagement. Responsible for the physical and emotional safety of program participants at all times.
- Provide instruction and material for K-12 students and teachers prior to, during, and after visits to the Presidio to ensure there is adequate preparation for effective on-site delivery and a valuable educational experience.
- Deliver thematic, multi-generational family programming that connects to the natural and cultural heritage of the Presidio.
- Serve as a collaborative member of the Presidio Trust education team; is able to be mentored by others and develop mentorship skills. In cooperation with the Education Program Manager, schedule meetings, set agendas, check and respond to fieldtrip emails/requests, and participate in weekly meetings.
- Work effectively with staff, interns, and volunteers within and outside the department. Schedule and help lead training efforts for the onboarding of new education interns, employees, and/or staff.
- In cooperation with the Education Team, develop and maintain effective working relationships with community partners, schools, scientific and academic institutions, and non-profit groups in order to further the educational goals of the Presidio Trust.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development in order to establish and maintain best practices for the park and to stay current in the field of education.
- Work under the direction of the Education Program Manager to ensure that overall program priorities are carried out.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Education, Science, History or equivalent; AND at least one year of experience in teaching/education (preferably place-based or outdoor education)
- Demonstrated skill in program delivery and youth development
- A professional interest in education and/or youth development
- Knowledge and skill in analysis, problem solving, writing, interpreting policies and regulations, and dealing effectively with people
- Practical understanding of educational institutions and processes and related political, social, and economic issues
- Ability to work well and collaborate with others, demonstrating a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
- Computer skills; competent in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- A valid California Driver’s License
- Passion for parks and working with youth; strong desire to work for the Presidio
- CPR and First Aid certification is highly desired (training can be provided)
- Second language skills (Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese) are highly desired along with cultural competency skills

The Heritage Program is truly collaborative and interdisciplinary – staff work across teams and with outside partners and community groups to bring the Presidio alive for visitors. Incumbent will work directly with youth and must successfully undergo a standard employment background investigation, which shall consist of a review of applicable county, state and Federal criminal and civil records. This position also requires a current, valid Driver’s License prior to starting work, and maintenance of a driver’s license throughout occupancy of the position. You will be subject to a driver’s license investigation as a New Entrant, and annual driver’s license reviews thereafter. An individual’s granting of a background investigation and resulting report is voluntary, however, employment is contingent upon the successful completion of the investigation. The Trust may refuse to hire an individual, rescind an offer of employment, or review and terminate the employment of a current employee who does not successfully complete a background investigation.
