About Us

We are a new, small, public middle school in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

OUR MODEL

We nurture the whole child and ensure high achievement through an innovative model designed to individualize instruction in a diverselearning environment, based on research from NYU (www.learningcultures.net). This model was piloted at successful schools including The Jacob Riis School and Arts and Letters and supports ICT. Students at the Urban Assembly Unison School work with teachers and peers to make choices and establish academic goals based on their interests, strengths and needs. On the path to these goals, students celebrate mistakes as opportunities for learning, and develop the grit to persevere. The challenges students pursue help them attain the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in college and beyond. By carefully analyzing and responding to student progress, we ensure that all students achieve at high levels. In our school students learn the skills they really need — how to find joy in learning while striving for excellence, and how to persist to solve hard problems both independently and collaboratively.

Our classrooms overflow with challenging material, exceptional teaching, and cooperative culture. We promote high achievement by requiring students to read at least 50 texts per year and complete 25 polished projects. Classroom and whole school community is built through regular sharing of ongoing student work. Kids learn to collaborate and form friendships with wide, diverse groups of peers. Families are partners in our work.
