About Us

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, is one of the nation's leading art museums, with important collections of European and American paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings, prints, illustrated books, rare books, and photographs, and a very active program of special exhibitions, many of which are in subject areas beyond the purview of the Gallery's collections. Collections range in date from the 12th century to the present day. The Gallery's scholarly resources are among the best in the United States, including a major research library, photographic archives, and extensive conservation facilities. The Gallery also houses the Center for Advanced Study in the History of Art, with its visiting research scholars. The Gallery is chiefly supported by the U.S. Government. Of the approximately 850 staff, 275 are involved in the management, care and interpretation of art, including approximately thirty curators, forty educators, and thirty conservators and scientists. There are 450 volunteers working at the Gallery. Permanent Federal and privately-funded employees who are U.S. citizens are entitled to receive federal health benefits, term life insurance, and federal retirement benefits. Privately funded, term and temporary employees, including fellows and interns, receive benefits according to the terms of the grant or special project under which they are hired. Annual operating budget approximately $167 million. Supported largely by the federal government (85%) and supplemented by private endowments, gifts and grants. For further information, please see http://www.nga.gov. The Gallery's mission is to collect, interpret, preserve and protect important works of art and to make its programs and the nation’s art collections accessible to visitors for enrichment and artistic and cultural understanding. Admission to the Gallery is free, and it is open seven days per week except for Christmas and New Year’s Day.
