Master of Social Work

Our Program

Seton Hall's MSW program has been nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report and is accredited by CSWE.

Be the difference.

Seton Hall University's Master of Social Work (MSW) program will give you the strong foundation you'll need to do exactly that.

Our MSW degree, which launched in 2015, is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. For students without a bachelor's degree in social work, the program is two years long, with the first year consisting of on-campus coursework. Students with a degree in social work go straight into the second year of the program — the Advanced Standing year — which consists of online courses and on-site fieldwork in the community. We also offer our students a number of opportunities to see their classroom lessons in action, such as participating in Social Work Day at the United Nations. And we offer the only graduate forensic social work program in the state of New Jersey.

In addition to frequent conference presentations and article publications in the most prestigious journals in the field, our social work faculty have decades of teaching experience with universities and government associations, including DYFS and the New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women. Faculty are also experienced professionals in the fields of psychotherapy, addiction counseling and child welfare. They work to improve the world both in and out of the classroom. One such example is Assistant Professor Widian Nicola, DSW, LCSW, who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border in August 2019 to volunteer with Catholic Charities in McAllen, Texas — and who is now the president-elect of the NASW-NJ.

Our students finish this program ready to make a difference. They are prepared to work with individuals, families or groups in a variety of advanced-practice settings — including behavioral health, substance abuse, healthcare and forensic practice.

Our MSW program has been nationally ranked as a Best Program by U.S. News & World Report. It offers course schedules that are convenient for working professionals and is open to both full- and part-time students. Students also reap the benefits of small class sizes and a close-knit graduate student community, allowing for personalized, one-on-one attention and mentorship. Our graduates complete this program fully prepared to show the world just what great minds can do.
