Our Program

CEU brings together students and faculty in an international and interdisciplinary atmosphere that encourages open debate and the exchange of ideas.

Based in Vienna, Central European University brings together students and faculty from over 100 countries in a community that encourages debate and the open exchange of ideas. The university is accredited in the United States, Austria and Hungary, and offers English-language graduate degree programs in the social sciences, humanities, business, economics, law, environmental sciences and policy, network science and cognitive science. In addition to coursework at the Vienna campus, students may also take advantage of academic activities and resources available on our Budapest campus as well as program-specific exchange opportunities around the world.

Established in 1991 by American-Hungarian philanthropist George Soros, Vaclav Havel, the first president of the Czech Republic and other visionary intellectuals from the region, CEU’s mission is to prepare future leaders to build and support open and democratic societies that respect human rights and the rule of law. We believe that our mission is just as vital today as it was three decades ago. Distinctive for the integrated approach it brings to teaching, research and public service, CEU emphasizes interdisciplinary coursework and collaborative research to create new knowledge and tackle complex societal problems. 

An 8:1 student/faculty ratio ensures a dynamic environment for collaboration and debate. Our faculty work closely with every student to help develop their critical thinking skills and explore their individual research interests.

CEU has earned global recognition for a range of social sciences, humanities and business programs. Our top-performing programs include political science and international relations, philosophy, history, business analytics and finance. Our work in emerging fields such as cognitive science and network and data science is also renowned internationally. According to the prestigious 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject, CEU ranks 41st in Politics and International Studies, 44th in Philosophy and 44th in Social Policy and Administration. The university's Business Analytics program is among the top 50 in the world according to the QS Business Masters Rankings.

Additional Requirements

All programs at CEU require one or more pieces of academic writing for the application, such as a statement of purpose, research proposal, academic essay on a given subject, writing sample, etc. Some programs at the Department of Economics and Business require GRE or GMAT scores as an entry condition.

CEU is a student-oriented university with a wide range of service units that provide personal attention and sup-port, including the Student Center, the Center for Academic Writing and the Computer and Statistics Center. We also offer access to medical services and psychological counseling.
