Our Program

As an institute for study of the cultural history of the material world, BGC is defined by the way it relates teaching, research, and exhibitions.

For over 25 years, Bard Graduate Center has been training the next generation of curators, researchers, and museum professionals. Our MA & PhD in Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture offers a broad exploration of history through its material traces, drawing on the fields of art history, anthropology, archaeology, cultural history, and philosophy. Students come from a range of majors, including art history and anthropology, but also religious studies, gender and women’s studies, sociology, and classics. The two-year MA includes international opportunities through our internship program and our two-week summer study trip. BGC alumni work in museums and collections all over the world, and many of our graduates go on to highly competitive doctoral programs. Scholarships and fellowships are available for MA students.
