Our Program
The Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) prepares students for advanced social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The program offers two concentrations, “Clinical Social Work” and “Administration and Policy Practice,” and provides experiential learning through internships at selected organizations with qualified educational supervision. The program organizes and integrates course content and field experiences using a systems/developmental framework and a bio-psycho-social perspective.
Students can tailor their MSSW education work with specific populations, in specific areas or in cross-disciplinary fields. Currently, the Steve Hicks School offers the following options:
Certificate programs:
- Military Social Work Practice
- Health Care Social Work
- School-Based Social Work Practice.
Dual degree programs with:
- McCombs School of Business
- Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies
- Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs
- Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
- UT Health School of Public Health
- UT Austin School of Law.
Portfolio Programs:
- Dispute Resolution
- Aging and Health
- Nonprofit Studies

The vast majority of Steve Hicks School graduates find jobs within three months. The school’s DiNitto Career Center offers comprehensive services to social work students, including career exploration, job-search coaching, licensure preparation and leadership opportunities.
