Outside the classroom, students benefit from Sheffield’s award-winning accommodation, leading sports facilities and a thriving social scene. Our Students’ Union is the hub of all social activities for students, and provides a range of clubs and societies, events, activities and volunteering opportunities. It has been voted the best Students’ Union in the UK for the past six years (Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2017-2022).

Home to more than half a million people, Sheffield is a vibrant city with a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. It’s one of the most affordable UK university city (2023 NatWest Student Living Index). Boasting more parks and woodlands than any other UK city, Sheffield is known for its music, art and digital scenes, striking Victorian and modern architecture, champion sport facilities, historic country houses, and rich and varied heritage. A third of the city lies within the borders of the beautiful Peak District National Park, and its central location and good transport links make Sheffield an ideal place from which to explore the UK and Europe.

Clubs & Associations

There are over 350 societies and sports clubs to get involved with. You could help to write the student newspaper or climb a mountain. If there isn’t a club or society for you, then you can start your own.

You don't have to stick to one thing. If you think your Singers society should get together with the Beekeeping society, go for it, see what happens. If you don't have the time to go to anything regularly, our Give It a Go scheme lets you sample different clubs and activities on a pay and play basis.

Our award-winning Sheffield Volunteering scheme offers you the chance to work with schools and charities. You can develop all sorts of skills – coaching, project management, leadership – in your spare time. It's a great way to get involved with the wider Sheffield community.

Careers

Our students come from all kinds of backgrounds. Our aim is for every single one of them to reach their full potential. That’s why the support we offer through our Careers Service is personal, built around you.

We want you to be able to work anywhere in the world, to make your mark among the brightest and best. To reach the top in your profession, if that’s your goal. To redefine it, if necessary. Or to create something completely new.

We’ll help you explore all your options, including employment, entrepreneurship and further study. You will also have the chance to connect with big private sector employers, SMEs and third sector organisations, finding inspiration and building a network of contacts.

Our job fairs are the biggest in the region, covering a wide range of industries and sectors. Employers regularly visit campus, meeting postgraduates, sharing expertise and recruiting for potential opportunities.

What Our Students Say

  • Danielle image

I love being able to walk everywhere, but the buses and taxis are great too. In general, it’s great to live in a city that not only offers great things, but also has easy access to them. I found the University was welcoming, and the Students’ Union in particular was very helpful in helping me find different events to join. I appreciate the independent study with strong support from staff members.

    Danielle, MA Landscape Architecture ‘20

I was lucky enough to come to the UK as my graduation gift and got to visit the University of Sheffield. I was able to meet with the director of the programme and got all my questions answered. During my time here, I have walked miles and miles just admiring all the natural beauty in Sheffield, there is no place like it. I know my time here is going to be remembered forever and again,

Andrea, MSc Psychological Research Methods. Winner of a Postgraduate Merit Scholarship ‘20

While the University and city are much smaller than Boston, where I did my undergraduate program, it is still a city school. The fact that at one moment you feel like you're in the middle of a very urban area only to walk around the corner and feel as if you're on campus was very familiar. All of the staff have been extremely friendly and helpful and the city itself has been extremely welcoming.

Emma, MSc Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology. Winner of a Fulbright Scholarship ‘20
