Want to make the world a better place? Don't just want it. Do it.
Seton Hall University's Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs will give you the strong foundation you'll need to do exactly that.
Seton Hall's NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration degree serves students interested in careers in the public and nonprofit sectors, preparing them for leadership roles in a variety of public service settings. We are dedicated to helping our students find the career that fits them best, and we pride ourselves on bringing academic theory into practice so that they are prepared to hit the ground running once they graduate.
We offer four concentrations: Health Policy and Management; Nonprofit Organization Management; Public Service: Leadership, Governance and Policy; or Data Visualization and Analytics. Students may also choose a 100% online MPA program with an exclusive focus on Non-Profit Management. Classes emphasize managerial and analytical skills, along with ethical and professional values.
Our faculty are leaders who practice what they teach, including the current and previous presidents of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC) and the former president of ARNOVA, a leading national authority on nonprofit management education research. Matthew Hale, Ph.D., MPA Program Chair, is one of several faculty whose expertise is regularly sought after by the media and who have appeared in a variety of print and broadcast news. They offer internationally recognized research and teaching programs and bring their diverse skills and experiences to every classroom.
MPA-specific scholarships are available.
Seton Hall's Master of Social Work degree, which launched in 2015, is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. For students without a bachelor's degree in social work, the program is two years long, with the first year consisting of on-campus coursework. Students with a degree in social work go straight into the second year of the program — the Advanced Standing year — which consists of online courses and on-site fieldwork in the community. We also offer our students a number of opportunities to see their classroom lessons in action, such as participating in Social Work Day at the United Nations. And we offer the only graduate forensic social work program in the state of New Jersey.
In addition to frequent conference presentations and article publications in the most prestigious journals in the field, our social work faculty have decades of teaching experience with universities and government associations, including DYFS and the New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women. Faculty are also experienced professionals in the fields of psychotherapy, addiction counseling and child welfare. They work to improve the world both in and out of the classroom. One such example is Assistant Professor Widian Nicola, DSW, LCSW, who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border in August 2019 to volunteer with Catholic Charities in McAllen, Texas -- and who is now the president-elect of the NASW-NJ.
Our students finish this program ready to make a difference. They are prepared to work with individuals, families or groups in a variety of advanced-practice settings — including behavioral health, substance abuse, healthcare and forensic practice.
Both the MPA and MSW programs have been nationally ranked as Best Programs by U.S. News & World Report. They offer course schedules that are convenient for working professionals and are open to both full- and part-time students. Students also reap the benefits of small class sizes and a close-knit graduate student community, allowing for personalized, one-on-one attention and mentorship. Our graduates complete these programs fully prepared to show the world just what great minds can do.
