Our Program

The IES is an academic Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and a policy think tank that focuses on the European Union in an international setting.

The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) specifically explores EU institutions, policies and law within the context of globalization and global governance, including a focus on the EU in international affairs and institutions. The disciplines applied at the IES include law, social/political sciences, economics and communication sciences, and the Institute’s activities focus on the various ways in which institutions, law and politics intersect with each other in the EU, its member states and at the international level.

Based on its research, the IES constitutes the focal point for teaching European Studies at the VUB. Our study programmes include:

Advanced Master in European Integration and Development*

LLM in International and European Law*

Postgraduate Certificate in EU Policy Making

Summer School on European Policy-Making

The Institute utilises its central location in Brussels for regularly organising events such as the IES Lecture Series, the IES Policy Forum, the biennial EU in International Affairs conference and other conferences and workshops for academia and the interested public. Furthermore, the IES publishes a book series, the IES Working Papers and the quarterly IES Newsletter.

What Our Students Say

  • "The LLM in International and European Law is a demanding as well as rewarding programme. The wide range of courses and the specialization in Public Law has enhanced my knowledge and interest on EU and International affairs beyond what I expected. Definitely, after concluding the LLM I reckon myself as a well-prepared legal professional who has gained a deep insight into latest legal matters."

Leire Alberdi (Spain), LLM in International and European Law ‘19
  • "As an American who is looking to work in the international sphere, I know I invested wisely in my career by undertaking the EuroMaster. For me, it was incredibly important to have an international qualification from a highly regarded university, that not only has allowed me to hone cross-applicable professional skills, but further develop my expertise in EU policy and security and development."

Laura Benbow (United States of America), Advanced Master in European Integration and Development ‘19
  • "From creating unexpected network opportunities to uncovering a fascination with the green transition, this advanced master's degree has significantly changed my career trajectory. While I started this degree with a firm focus on international relations, I now find myself engrossed in climate and energy policy, which can be attributed to the excellent classes and professors."
