ABOUT THE POSITION

The Greenlining Institute seeks a strategic, collaborative and visionary Associate Director of Development to build on its legacy of advancing economic opportunity and empowering people of color. Reporting to and partnering with the VP of Development and Communications, the Associate Director will manage the cultivation and stewardship of institutional funders to help the organization meet its ambitious short-term and long-term growth targets.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Strategic Direction for Fund Development Activities

  • Provides strategic leadership for the cultivation of institutional philanthropic funders and partners in collaboration with VP of Development and Communications and policy teams
  • Directs the development and execution of Greenlining’s annual fundraising plan to ensure long term financial stability of the organization with guidance from VP of Development and Communications
  • Responsible for growing and diversifying institutional contributions, including general operating support for the organization and its program teams
  • Collaborates across functions to develop high-quality, proactive and responsive development strategies
  • Oversees and monitors compliance with relevant federal, state, and local guidelines
  • Participates in organizational development and strategic planning activities to effectively advance Greenlining’s vision and strategy

Grant Management Oversight

  • Oversees the refinement, maintenance, and efficacy of organization-wide grants management (Salesforce) systems and processes that leverage the strengths of the organization and result in greater efficiency, coordination, and transparency with finance and policy teams
  • Oversees the monitors timely completion and quality control of proposals, reports, budgets, and other grant materials for a portfolio of grant relationships

Fundraising, Communications and Funder Relationship Cultivation

  • Drives cross-team collaboration with program teams to develop new concepts, submit renewals and reports, and maintain funder relationships and deadlines
  • Supports the cultivation and proposal development for a portfolio of grant relationships
  • Fosters partnerships with the Board and external constituencies, including funders, coalition partners, political and community leaders, and media
  • Collaborates with Communications team in the development and execution of a coordinated communications strategy to effectively tell the story of Greenlining's work and incorporate strategic communications into our advocacy

Staff Leadership & Resource Management for Unit

  • Directly responsible for recruiting and supervising a small team to drive high-level impact for fund development and grant management efforts
  • Proactively aligns individual workplans with team level goals and organizational aims and uses rigorous methods and systems to keep projects on track and achieve team goals
  • Cultivates growth in all core competency areas including Communication, Collaboration, Strategic Innovation, Technical Expertise, Adaptability and Accountability
  • Provides leadership in cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture and experience
  • Supports staff alignment with organizational priorities and collaboration across teams
  • Steps into a broader organizational role in mentoring/training others beyond immediate team
  • Prepares and manages the team’s budget to ensure organizational and programmatic needs are met while operating within legal and budget parameters
  • Maintain effective financial practices and stewardship of the organization’s resources

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • 5+ years of experience in fundraising, including proposal writing, grant reporting, and funder cultivation, in a nonprofit setting
  • 3+ years of experience in a senior level leadership role with a strong and significant track record of success
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required. Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of racial justice issues and commitment to championing causes that serve low-income and communities of color
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, planning, and facilitation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to confidently speak and represent the organization with funders
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including flexibility and the ability to listen, negotiate and collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and be both creative and strategic when confronted with complex and multifaceted opportunities and challenges
  • A positive attitude, compassion, and strong team-oriented work ethic
  • Fluency with donor databases, ideally Salesforce.com
  • Proficient in Google Apps, Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
  • A consensus-builder with strong emotional intelligence to relate to, understand and lead a team; ability to build and motivate strong, efficient teams that exhibit high levels of trust and accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain people-centric engagement strategies
  • Ability to evaluate existing systems, and develop and implement improvements
  • Courageous, strategic, collaborative and visionary leadership while being accountable, approachable, effective and inspiring
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as needed, to meetings and conferences throughout the state and possibly other locations
