Academic Coach/Learning Specialist for Harvard Law School Student Learning Support

Harvard's Graduate Student Learning Support (GSLS) GSLS provides graduate students with the opportunity to meet individually with a learning specialist for consultation about academic concerns. The GSLS program is for students who want support in the following areas:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Writing skills
  • Time-management
  • Organization strategies
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Note-taking
  • Outlining

The learning specialist will work with Harvard Law School students and report to the Dean of Students staff and will also attend monthly meetings team meetings with other Harvard GSLS staff.

Responsibilities:

The learning specialist will collaborate closely with the Harvard Law School Dean of Students staff in order to facilitate students' learning effectiveness consistent with program requirements at the law school. The learning specialist will support individual students on a range of academic-related support services including exam preparation, note-taking, outlining, writing strategies, and reading strategies. The learning specialist will hold regular academic skills workshops with the Board of Student Advisors (BSAs) and Graduate Program advisors.

Schedule:

Part-time hours (up to 14h per week) Monday – Friday. The learning specialist will schedule their own appointments with students on campus. Variable hours during the academic year with busier times at the start and end of the semester. Hours are primarily in the afternoon with some mornings dependent on student and learning specialist availability.

Bachelor's degree required. Experience working with college, professional school, and/or graduate students in a teaching, tutoring, or coaching capacity required.

J.D. preferred. 3 years of experience preferred providing academic support to university students in one or more areas related to college learning, such as peer tutoring programs, teaching, reading and study skills, learning difficulties/disorders/disabilities, advising, or academic coaching.

Demonstrated interest and experience working with graduate student and college populations that are highly diverse in terms of, for example, race, language of origin, ethnicity, nationality, religion, age, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Experience working in higher education with students who have learning challenges. Ability to interpret neuropsych testing and advise on accommodations for learning. Formal testing/assessment is not a responsibility of this position.
