Mothering Justice is a statewide project in Michigan dedicated to empowering mothers of color to influence policy on behalf of themselves and their families. Through advocacy, leadership development, voter empowerment and promoting family-friendly advocacy, Mothering Justice raises the voices of mothers and helps them become policy shapers. The overall goal of the organization is to have a well-organized group of mothers that can engage fellow parents and lawmakers around a variety of issues that affect working families.

Job Description

Since 2017, Mothering Justice has grown significantly from a team of five to over twenty staff members and is expanding its impact nationally. To support this growth, Mothering Justice is seeking a Deputy Director for its Michigan team. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Michigan Executive Director to support and lead a passionate and talented staff, contribute to and represent Mothering Justice’s mission and work across the state and nationally, and guide the adoption of strong management practices to support the growing team. The heart of the job is to collaborate with the MI Exec Director to lead the team, helping to maintain consistency in processes and structure, manage Safety Net coalition work and ensure success of major programs.

The Deputy Director will support the team across evolving opportunities and challenges and can expect to engage quickly in these areas:

Support the growth and management of a passionate, dedicated and diverse team.

The Deputy Director will work with the Michigan Executive Director on all stages of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding and training and performance management. The Deputy Director will assess and improve on Mothering Justice’s policies and practices to attract, develop and retain a talented team and will grow and support a collaborative, positive and inclusive team culture, bridging geographic distance among team members and fostering communication across the team. Activities will include:

  • Directly manage six Directors, including Organizing, Communications, Political and Admin/Logistics leads and co-directors of the Childcare Program,
  • Develop job descriptions, recruit and vet team members, steward interview processes and hire stellar members to the program teams,
  • Lead employee onboarding, development and retention programs and conduct periodic skills-building and training to ensure consistent, thoughtful and effective practice,
  • Appraise performance of team members,
  • Investigate employee issues and conflicts and bring them to resolution in alignment with restorative justice values and practices,
  • Work with HR consultant to develop Human Resources policies and procedures, and
  • Identify, retain and direct the services of additional consultants, as needed.

Contribute to the strategy and vision for Mothering Justice in Michigan and nationally.

The Deputy Director will collaborate with the CEO, Michigan Executive Director, board members, staff, and other stakeholders to grow its community of moms empowered to lift their voices, be advocates and inform policy. The Deputy Director will represent Mothering Justice and its mission to a wide audience and build relationships and partnerships that inform its direction. This includes:

  • Assist the executive director with strategic planning and policy positions,
  • Ensure coordination and alignment across programs and projects towards Mothering Justice’s goals and strategies,
  • Support the development and stewardship of relationships, including with community partners and policy makers,
  • Represent Mothering Justice publicly, including to the press when needed, and
  • Manage the organization in the absence of the executive director.

Lead Mothering Justice’s program efforts towards the vision of a strong Michigan Safety Net.

The Deputy Director will actively support the Safety Net program team and oversee the success of programs and events. Working in partnership with other team members, the Deputy Director will contribute to:

  • Direct outreach to community members,
  • Work with legislators and public officials,
  • Grow the coalition of organizations, and
  • Facilitate group meetings and presentations.

Mothering Justice is a growing organization, and the Deputy Director can expect to collaborate with the team and Michigan Executive Director to understand and support additional needs and opportunities as they arise.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to social/economic justice and community organizing,
  • Experience growing, managing and developing a diverse team and coaching and supporting managers,
  • Experience contributing to and guiding implementation of organizational or programmatic strategy,
  • A belief in the power of restorative justice practices in community and team settings,
  • Track record of developing and maintaining relationships and experience working in coalition and partnership with other organizations,
  • Experience working in issues related to the safety net is a plus,
  • Good listening and communication skills across a variety of audiences, including the public and press,
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team,
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet frequent deadlines,
  • Well-organized and experienced keeping a work plan,
  • Self-starter, quick learner, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and
  • Flexibility to work weeknights and weekends and travel as needed (average of once/month).
