Managing Director- Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration

Requisition Number: STFR004700

Division/College: School of Law

Location: Boston Main Campus

Full-time/Part-time: Full Time

Responsibilities:

The Center for Law in the Public Interest at Northeastern University School of Law (“NUSL”) is the hub of myriad, outstanding public interest activities that reflect the NUSL ethos that law is most powerful when it serves social justice. Already NUSL has fourteen clinics, institutes and special programs that bring a public interest focus to their mission and work; and a broad ranging curriculum exploring legal areas that disproportionately affect the underrepresented and marginalized in our society, including the unique, client-centered, first-year course Legal Skills in Social Context. The law school annually hosts world-class, public interest attorneys to share experiences with our students, including the Daynard Distinguished Visiting Fellows, the Givelber Distinguished Public Interest Lecturers and the Valerie Gordon Human Rights Lecturer, sponsored by the Program on Human Rights in the Global Economy. Our students aspire to public interest careers at a rate exceeding those of nearly every law school in the country. Relative to graduating-class size, NUSL ranks fifth in the country, according to one recent study, in receiving the prestigious Skadden Fellowships and Equal Justice Awards. However, we need to push our institution to become the leading public interest law school in the 21st century.

The Center is now hiring its first Managing Director. The Director will work with the Faculty Director to implement a strategic plan for bringing NUSL's public interest focus to the next level and, with direction from the Faculty Director, will provide long-term and day-to-day leadership and management of the Center. The Director will work closely with the Assistant Director for Public Interest in the Center for Career Development and Cooperative Learning to identify and secure for NUSL graduates the public interest jobs of the 21st century. The Director will have responsibility for organizing the Center's lectures, colloquia and conferences; will work with faculty on curriculum development aimed at building a specialized legal pedagogy for social justice lawyering in a changing world (including exploration of a specialized academic track or certificate program for public interest students); will support an alumni/ae and faculty mentoring program for students seeking public interest careers; will be the hub for developing a CPIAC pro bono program for NUSL ; will work with the Faculty Director and the Director of Alumni/ae Relations and Development to create an Advisory Board and to explore additional financial resources for public interest activities; will work with the Director of Communications on the marketing of NUSL as a public interest law school; will propose and manage the Center's budget; and will, in coordination with the Faculty Director, the Dean and the Associate Deans, hire and supervise staff as needed. The Director will also work with the Dean and Associate Deans to develop new and expand existing non-JD programs relating to the public interest; this will include outreach efforts to graduate and undergraduate programs at Northeastern to enhance the Law School's public interest presence on campus.

Qualifications:

The Director must have a J.D. with at least 7 years of experience as an attorney working in positions demonstrably devoted to the public interest. Some of this experience may have been in a relevant law school administrative position, ideally in increasingly more senior positions where strategic planning was part of his/her work. The Director should have a combination of national and/or international professional network of public interest attorneys, marketing experience, supervisory experience, and/or community organizing experience. The Director also should have leadership experience in a professional setting and have demonstrated success in collaborating among different constituencies. The Director must be available to travel, work evenings and weekends as necessary (with appropriate notice for planning purposes). Excellent writing, organizational, presentation, interpersonal, and managerial skills are required. Prior work in legal education preferred. Prior work with law students is a requirement.

NUSL is looking for an enthusiastic attorney who will serve as role model for students and administrators alike. The ideal Director will have spent time on the frontlines of public interest work in one or more areas related to immigration, environment, access to justice, low wage labor and employment, economic justice, social welfare, poverty and criminal justice issues, and/or issues affecting women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, low-income people, and those with disabilities. The Director must be flexible and able to think outside of the box to help prepare students for the wide variety of ways they may use their law degrees in service of the public interest.
