Bennington College seeks a full time Science Technician for a wide range of responsibilities in the Science & Mathematics discipline group. Most generally, they are responsible for supporting the research and learning of faculty and students through the maintenance and fabrication of equipment used for scientific demonstrations and experiments. These duties currently include, but are not limited to:
- Working with students and faculty to fabricate equipment to support student research across the science curriculum
- Fabrication of equipment (mainly working with wood and metal) to support classroom learning in physics, computer science, mathematics, biology, geology, and astronomy
- Running and maintaining the Dickinson science building woodshop
- Caring for small animals used in biology projects; mainly amphibians, reptiles and rodents
- Maintenance and fabrication of large-scale demonstrations to support the Physics curriculum (e.g. trebuchet, large-scale ballistic demonstrations, etc.
- Maintenance of the microscopes used in the biology classrooms
- Operation of the Environmental Chambers
- Maintenance of equipment in the Stickney Observatory, Physics Lab and three Biology Labs
- Assistance with demonstrations in Physics classes
While specific duties typical to the position are listed, the need for a person who is flexible
cannot be overstated -- the needs of this position will evolve as the research areas of the faculty and students change and a good candidate for this job must be enthusiastically agile. The ideal candidate for this position will have a demonstrated ability to work well with students and faculty to enable learning and research. While there are consistent responsibilities, the details of the job changes day-to-day and week-to-week as the needs of faculty and students change. A high regard for personal and work-place safety, willingness and ability to work across disciplines with a diverse body of students and faculty, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and strong mechanical aptitude are required. Outside the academic terms, the Science Technician may be assigned some technical support responsibilities for other programs at the College.
