The Matrimonial and Economic Justice Project Director manages all aspects of the Mat/EJP project, including the oversight of client services by the staff; training and professional development of staff; monitoring and reporting compliance with program grants; representing the project in community outreach and public events; supervising staff handling contested and uncontested matrimonial cases, contested family court actions, landlord-tenant matters, public benefits legal advocacy, and enforcement actions in all five boroughs, and providing direct representation to clients.

  • Represents domestic violence and trafficking victims in all aspects of contested and uncontested matrimonial litigation and other family law matters, including child and spousal support, from inception to resolution
  • Supervises Sanctuary legal staff and pro bono attorneys handling contested and uncontested matrimonial cases, contested family court actions, landlord-tenant matters, public benefits legal advocacy, and enforcement actions
  • Supervises intake for all matrimonial matters
  • Recruits, mentors, trains and supervises law students, volunteers, and pro bono attorneys in matrimonial and related legal matters
  • Develops and cultivates relationships with law firms seeking to handle Mat/EJP matters on a pro bono basis
  • Conceptualizes the Project's goals and implements them
  • Collaborates with Development Department and Legal Center Director in implementing funding strategies, conceptualizing new projects and drafting grant applications
  • Collaborates with other domestic violence advocates practicing in the fields of matrimonial and family law, landlord-tenant, and public benefits
  • Represents Sanctuary for Families in matrimonial and economic justice issues on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency
  • Devises and implements strategies, specialized projects and campaigns to further Sanctuary for Families' mission to improve the legal system's response and expand services to victims of domestic violence in matrimonial and economic justice issues
  • Collaborates with Sanctuary's Advocacy Committee to develop and implement policy agenda in the areas of matrimonial law, housing law, and economic justice
  • Advocates for clients in legal and non-legal forums outside of their matrimonial case, including housing, public benefits, collections and debt issues
  • Trains law students, pro bono attorneys, and community based organizations on matrimonial and family law
  • Facilitates clients' access to intra-agency and outside resources, and administers provision of direct financial assistance and donations to clients
  • Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor

  • JD and Admission to the NY Bar
  • At least ten years of experience as an attorney
  • At least seven years of matrimonial law experience
  • Strong computer skills
  • Good public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Ability to cooperate well with diverse people and institutions
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of gender-based oppression and a strong motivation to combat gender-based violence
