    Director of Budget Management & Operations

    ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

    The Director of Budget Management & Operations will support senior leadership in overseeing GrowNYC’s suite of programs with an eye on financial operations, budget reporting, and grant management. This role is pivotal in ensuring the integration of financial practices with program execution, creating the operational infrastructure necessary for accurate budget tracking and compliance. The role will work closely with the Director of Finance to ensure collaboration with program directors to cultivate best financial practices to meet budget goals. Additionally, this position will assist in operationalizing best practices in management systems, fostering appropriate integration and collaboration across teams and functional areas to ensure strong organizational performance and the achievement of strategic goals. The Director collaborates with the CEO and the Strategy & Operations Executive Director to ensure overall organizational success. 

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Operations and Administration

    • Establish and implement policies, systems, and processes that promote the organization's efficiency and effectiveness, ensuring consistent and accurate budget creation, tracking, implementation, grant management, and reporting across all programs.
    • Analyze and interpret data and metrics to evaluate performance in relation to grant reporting and program goals.
    • Maintain up-to-date information about the organization’s operations and report in a timely and thorough manner.
    • Proactively address and resolve high-priority issues, showcasing your ability to communicate effectively and take decisive action.
    • Visit sites on a rotational basis to fully understand income and expense issues and staff needs.      

    Budget and Fiscal Management

    • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to develop the annual budgets, to assist program staff in timely reporting and complete the annual audit.
    • Identify, address, and report on operational and budgetary challenges in collaboration with Program staff.
    • Partner with the advancement team to ensure grant goals are met and reporting is timely and accurate providing operational and strategic support for grant proposals while facilitating the involvement of program leaders.
    • Report to senior staff about program topics, SOPs and financial needs and other issues necessary to ensure programs are operating smoothly and financials are in order.
    • Optimize the speed and ease of timely financial reporting between finance and program management using adequate software (NetSuite, Excel, etc.)

    Internal Management and Stakeholder Engagement

    • Work with directors and leadership to oversee the management of the programs and operations team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, fostering a culture of accountability, and driving continuous improvement across all functions.
    • Serve as a key liaison between task forces and senior management, facilitating cross-departmental communication, ensuring that strategic initiatives are executed effectively, and addressing any barriers to success. Lead individual and team staff meetings as needed.
    • Proactively identify and escalate critical issues to senior leadership, providing informed recommendations for resolution.

    ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial operations and program management, particularly within the nonprofit sector. They will excel at fostering cross-functional collaboration, ensuring seamless integration of financial practices with program execution, and driving operational efficiency to support the organization’s mission in food access and food justice. Qualifications include:

    • 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in a comparable role, with a focus on financial operations, program management, or a related field.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of industry best practices, particularly within the nonprofit sector, with an emphasis on financial management and operational efficiency.
    • Tech-savvy and resourceful, with demonstrated ability to work comfortably in ERP financial software platforms; experience with Oracle NetSuite is strongly preferred, though familiarity with similar systems such as SAP or Sage is also highly valued.
    • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, particularly in program operations and advancement, to address budget challenges and ensure timely, accurate grant reporting.
    • Working knowledge of data analysis, performance/operation metrics, and IT/Business infrastructure, with proficiency in Google Suite.
    • Demonstrable competence in strategic planning and supporting program expansion and growth initiatives
    • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities including conflict resolution and problem solving
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Experience in a nonprofit environment with interest in food access and food justice.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range for this role is $110,000 - $150,000 commensurate with experience and includes full benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, pet insurance, long term disability, Incentive Savings plan, paid holidays, sick leave, PTO, commute, and FSA programs, parental leave for full-time regular employees who have been employed with GrowNYC for 175 days and FSA programs. GrowNYC is eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.) This position is managerial, not part of the bargaining unit.
