The Maria Droste Counseling Services (MDCS), established in 1982 by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, is a vital community resource in New York City offering affordable, high-quality mental health services. Led by a volunteer staff of more than 20 mental health professionals (psychologists, clinical social workers, and counselors), MDCS offers a compassionate, supportive therapeutic environment for clients who are dealing with difficulties at home, work, school or in relationships. These include problems that affect many individuals during their lives: depression, anxiety, bereavement, trauma, addiction and low self-esteem.
To date, thousands of people in the NY metropolitan area have received mental health care at MDCS, in individual, couple and group settings. Located in a 10-office suite on Madison Avenue, the practice is rooted in the core values of compassion, dignity, hope and community. Clients are referred to MDCS mainly through word-of-mouth from current/past clients, therapists, as well as religious, educational and healthcare institutions. Care is provided on a sliding scale, with fees dependent on the individual’s financial situation.
In addition to delivering services to the public, MDCS also provides training, development, and supervision to practitioners in a supportive peer environment. This training includes one-year internships for graduate students in social work from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service.
MDCS helps everyday individuals manage and resolve behavioral health issues and navigate the sometimes rocky transitions in life. MDCS needs an experienced mental health practitioner and leader to be its next Executive Director to ensure and sustain the organization’s critical role in the community.
The Executive Director, reporting to MDCS’ Board of Directors, provides mission-based leadership to the MDCS staff and partners. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing clinical and administrative functions, ensuring the provision of high quality professional counseling and psychotherapy services to each client regardless of gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, age, or financial advantage, with compassion and respect for individual dignity. Other key duties include clinical supervision, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach.
· Manage the day-to-day operations of MDCS, maintaining MDCS’ reputation as a provider of high-quality, affordable mental health services
· Process intake information and initiate all client assignments, and maintain and update staff caseloads and schedules
· Work with Provincial Council/Membership Corporation, Board and staff to ensure that the mission of MDCS is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach
- Cultivate a strong working relationship with the Board based on trust, confidence, and transparency; together with the Board, communicate and sustain a clear vision, mission and strategy for the organization, and set internal policy; recruit new Board members to meet the organization’s needs
- Create and implement a strong fundraising plan; build and maintain relationships with donors – individual, foundation and corporate – and create new avenues of fundraising
- Chair Planning/Governance Committee and general staff meetings
- Maintain strong financial oversight including annual budgets and quarterly financial reports; set long- and short-term financial objectives
- Manage recruitment, hiring, and development of staff; provide leadership, supervise, and set quality standards
- Foster staff development by encouraging morale and providing professional development opportunities
· Oversee the coordination and supervision of the Intern Program and cultivate relationship with Fordham
· Uphold and encourage Good Shepherd heritage and mission and collaborate with other Good Shepherd agencies
- Oversee all marketing and public relations activities, including agency annual report; represent MDCS in the community at large, including Catholic Charities Federation of Agencies, and serve as a spokesperson to build brand awareness and relationships for the organization across all constituencies
The Executive Director position requires a proven track record of accomplishments leading a nonprofit agency that provides counseling or mental health services. The following qualifications are required:
· Fully licensed in a mental health discipline (e.g., LCSW, Psy.D., Ph.D.)
· Five or more years of clinical supervisory experience, as well as senior nonprofit management experience
· A commitment to and understanding of MDCS’ mission and ability to convey the strategic future of MDCS to staff, board, volunteers and donors
· Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a relationship builder who is a strategic and visionary thinker, effective and confident
· At ease in the role of seeking grants and other forms of fundraising; ability to develop institutional partnerships to advance the mission
· Sound management experience with the finances of an organization of similar capacity and complexity as well as strong organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize and implement
· Hands-on management style with the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise
· Entrepreneurial, innovative and technologically savvy with the interest in and capacity to grow an organization
· Personal integrity and credibility
This position offers the flexibility of a four-day work week to allow the ED to maintain a private practice, if desired.
