The objectives of the Communications Department are to increase engagement with and enhance the reputation of the Aspen Institute brand, promote the work of individual Institute programs to help them reach their target audiences and achieve specific missions, and serve as a collaborative partner who recommends and executes strategic communications approaches. The department oversees all external communications including the Institute website, social media, media relations, digital editorial content, video, graphic design and print publications.

Basic Function

The Senior Associate, Media Relations conducts media relations, media pitching, and media partnership development activities on behalf of the Institute and its many programs. The position also contributes significantly to developing media engagement strategies, and manages media operations and media outreach for Institute programs and fellowship networks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Media Strategy

  • Lead development of media outreach strategies for Institute program initiatives, and events
  • Assist Chief External Affairs Officer in communications support for the Office of the President, the Aspen Ideas Festival and other major Institute undertakings
  • Manage existing media partnerships and seek out and establish future ones on behalf of the Aspen Institute and its programs in coordination with program and event directors
  • Stay informed of trends in media and news coverage

Media Relations

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for news media inquiries about program activities and experts
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with reporters, editors, and news organizations
  • Develop relationships with Institute program directors and staff and stay informed about their activities in order to better support their media objectives, and to assist the Manager of Communications and Digital with liaison to and support of the programs overall
  • Pitch op-eds and other opinion pieces for publications in major news outlets on behalf of programs, staff, and fellows
  • Speak on-the-record with reporters on behalf of the Aspen Institute

Media Operations

  • Oversee press recruitment, credentialing, and press coverage of major events, with assistance from the Digital Associate and Producer
  • Manage the Media Resources area on the Institute website
  • Oversee data analytics and monitoring of the Aspen Institute and its programs in media outlets, with assistance from the Public Affairs Associate

Research & Writing

  • Draft, edit, and distribute news releases
  • Assist with drafting and editing op-eds by Aspen Institute staff and fellows, as needed
  • Conduct research and draft briefings for the Chief External Affairs Officer and the President/CEO, as needed

Principal Interactions

  • Interacts routinely with Communications team members, Institute employees at all levels, members of the media, and external constituents.

Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related area, with three (3) to five (5) years of related experience
  • Experience with communications strategies in a public policy context
  • Strong knowledge of the public policy sector
  • Strong customer service and diplomatic skills; Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse set of internal stakeholders and with external media
  • Outstanding writing skills with a focus on detail and accuracy

This position requires some overnight travel, especially during the Summer months, and may require evening and occasional weekend work
