New York Peace Institute envisions a world in which all people have the resources to creatively and constructively resolve their differences.
New York Peace Institute is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower people to find creative and durable solutions to their disputes. New York Peace Institute teaches vital conflict resolution skills to communities and organizations and advances the field by training and certifying professional mediators.
Founded in 2011, New York Peace Institute programming and staff were housed for 30 years prior within the victim assistance organization Safe Horizon, an organization whose mission is “to provide support, prevent violence, and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families and communities.” Since 2011, New York Peace Institute has grown significantly, having added new programs and increased the number of staff by 75%. New York Peace Institute is a full-service Community Dispute Resolution Center providing a range of conflict engagement services free of charge to roughly 14,100 clients in Brooklyn and Manhattan annually. In addition to their highly regarded mediation services, New York Peace Institute offers robust programs in restorative justice, and conflict coaching. Through a collaborative partnership with the New York Police Department (NYPD), New York Peace Institute trains hundreds of Neighborhood Coordination Officers in mediation and conflict resolution techniques.
Funded in large part by the New York State Unified Court System, the Office of Court Administration, and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, New York Peace Institute has significantly increased its revenues by leveraging its hugely successful dispute resolution training programs. New York Peace Institute is an innovator in its field. It is known locally, nationally and internationally for its mediation services, volunteer mediator trainings, school-based programs and NYPD training. In 2016, it was a Semi-Finalist for the New York Community Trust Nonprofit Excellence Awards, an award recognizing excellence in nonprofit management.
New York Peace Institute Programs and Services Include:
Mediation and Dispute Resolution Services
· Special Education/Early Intervention. Launched in 1998, this program provides mediation services for parents, including parents of children with special needs, school administrators, the NYC Department of Education and the NYS Department of Health. Approximately 980 individuals are served annually.
· Community Mediation. Launched in 1981, this program addresses issues such as housing and interpersonal disputes between co-workers, family members, friend and neighbors. Referrals are sourced from 311, online self-referrals and the NYC Housing Authority. Approximately 900 individuals are served annually.
· Civil Court Mediation. Launched in 2000, the program addresses issues such as breaches of contract, and damages. Referrals are received from court clerks, litigants, court attorneys and judicial officers. Approximately 800 individuals are served annually.
· Criminal Court Mediation. Launched in 2009, this program provides mediation services using a Restorative Justice approach for issues such as harassment, assaults, criminal trespassing/mischief, property damage, menacing, noise and debts. Referrals are primarily from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. Approximately 700 individuals are served annually.
· Restorative Justice. Launched in 2012, this program provides Restorative Justice processes to schools, court-involved youth, and youth at risk of suspension. Referrals come from the Manhattan and Brooklyn District Attorneys’ Offices. Approximately 600 individuals are served annually.
· Conflict Coaching. Launched in 2017, this program provides a 1-1 process of conflict transformation. Referrals come from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, self-referrals, schools, and organizations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In its first year of programming, 400 individuals were served.
· Co-Parenting Mediation. Launched in 2007, this program helps parents who live separately to develop strategies that will work for them and their child(ren) based on a parenting plan for scheduling, decision-making and financial arrangements for their child(ren). Approximately 120 individuals are served annually.
New York Peace Institute Training
Over the past 37 years New York Peace Institute has provided conflict resolution and mediation training to thousands of individuals from all walks of life, including: United Nations hostage negotiators, New York City cab drivers, police officers, school teachers, actors, Human Resources professionals, attorneys, entrepreneurs, diplomats, religious leaders, and community members. New York Peace Institute works closely with City and State agencies, non-governmental organizations, schools, and private corporations. It is creating the largest civilian peacekeeping force in New York City.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will partner with lay leadership to solidify the strategic direction for New York Peace Institute. Working with the Board, you will shepherd the organization to its next level of success by increasing awareness about the organization and its mission, and by helping to ensure that the best programs and services are being offered to its community.
The Board seeks an experienced and forward thinking organizational leader who welcomes a challenge; and has strong intellect and communication skills to mobilize New York Peace Institute’s resources including staff, lay leaders and volunteer mediators. You will have a track record of demonstrated success in nonprofit management, preferably in alternative dispute resolution, resource development; and/or, organizational development. You should be conversant on issues related to the field of conflict resolution as well as government funding. You will be the strong external voice for the agency, representing New York Peace Institute to its varied partnerships and stakeholders in the community and raising its public profile. You will also have strong fundraising skills.
You must have an appetite for innovation which is grounded in practical thinking and thoughtful execution. They will have strong management skills by which to organize, deploy, motivate and inspire a talented staff towards achieving the organization’s goals. You will also develop the New York Peace Institute culture which values transparency and respect and which recognizes the importance of a diverse workforce and its contributions; maximize the skills and passions of the professional staff; and also sustain and expand the work of volunteers and the community.
· Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the Board, staff, and the community. Execute and implement strategies and programs which carry out the shared vision formulated with the Board. Assess the current landscape and develop a strategic plan to continue to position New York Peace Institute as the leader in its field.
· Provide leadership and direction to staff and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization that will enable New York Peace Institute to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives.
· Recruit, train, motivate and manage staff through effective goal setting, delegation, evaluation and communication.
· Implement and maintain a performance management and improvement system, regularly reviewing personnel performance.
· Play a key role in building donor relationships and in one-on-one donor solicitation; prepare and strategically engage key Board members in fund development.
· With the leadership of the Board, develop and implement a long-term plan to significantly increase gift and fund-raising revenues from foundations and individuals as well as government supporters.
· Cultivate a strong and transparent relationship with the Board and ensure open communication regarding the measurement of financial, programmatic and policy goals, against agreed-upon milestones.
· In partnership with the Board, continue to grow a diverse and inclusive Board that is highly engaged and able to leverage and secure resources.
· Provide prompt, thorough and accurate information to keep the Board appropriately informed of the organization’s financial position.
· Work with Treasurer/Finance and Investment Committee and financial manager to develop annual budgets that support operating plans and prudently manage New York Peace Institute’s resources within budgetary guidelines.
· Oversee the Board and staff process for developing the annual budget.
Communications and Public Relations
· Serve as the face and voice of New York Peace Institute ensuring that its mission and programs are consistently presented in a strong and positive way to wide-ranging constituencies, including government, peer organizations, funders, the media, and the public.
· Maintain and increase New York Peace Institute’s presence on social media platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and other relevant platforms.
Program Development and Effectiveness
· Collect and analyze information that measures success of program efforts and implement appropriate improvements.
· Keep abreast of current trends, and anticipate future trends, that are likely to have an impact on New York Peace Institute’s work.
· Provide oversight to the Board in developing concepts for innovative programs.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
· Lead and direct a process that will ensure staff and mediators maintain a high level of literacy on issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
· Ensure that in its internal and external relations, New York Peace Institute demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to issues of social injustice and oppression.
· Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree(s) preferable.
· A minimum of 15 years professional experience including 7 years of leadership experience at senior level with a non-profit organization. Or, as a successful leader with business experience and a highly transferable skill set.
· Strong understanding of the Dispute Resolution/Conflict Resolution sector or a complementary field.
· Visionary leader, strategic thinker and problem solver who is skilled in multi-tasking and prioritizing output and who has unquestioned integrity and values.
· Proven evidence of strong managerial and administrative skills resulting in the efficient management of an agency or multiple programs.
· Track record of motivating, leading, managing a skilled staff, in particular during a time of organizational definition and change.
· Success in recruiting and retaining a highly qualified, diverse, and effective staff.
· Proven track record in fundraising, with experience in identifying, cultivating, and securing support from foundations, major donors, and other individuals.
· Knowledge and experience in one or more of New York Peace Institute’s program areas and/or ability to embody the values of New York Peace Institute.
· Financial acumen, budget oversight and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
· Charismatic leader with skills in public speaking and public relations with proven excellence in effective oral and written communication.
· Ability to be decisive while also engaging in an inclusive thought process.
· Fully conversant and adept with social media and how to use it to brand New York Peace Institute to further its visibility within New York City.
· Excellent communicator who can manage up and down in an organization.
· Strong emotional intelligence with ability to delegate and to give credit to others for successful achievements.
