DC-based Program Director: Asia-Pacific (Afghanistan, Bangladesh)
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) seeks a Program Director to join its Asia-Pacific team. This full-time role is responsible for leading and overseeing current country programs in South Asia, including Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The Program Director will manage team members, contribute to strategic planning, oversee aspects of program implementation, and ensure quality control of programs and written products. In addition, the Program Director will initiate and lead program development and fundraising efforts for Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This six-month position is available immediately and may be extended, contingent on pending funding.
- Provides leadership and support to the management of NDI's Afghanistan, Bangladesh and other program portfolios
- Leads team members in the planning, design and evaluation of programs in collaboration with in-country and headquarters-based staff, local partners and external experts
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with international democratic development organizations, national partners and networks, and NDI's network of trainers and experts
- Works with field directors and teams on NDI and donor policy compliance
- Leads and supervises staff in developing proposals, briefs and workplans, and in documenting program progress and achievements, ensuring quality control of written reports
- Ensures oversight of program budgets and works with field and DC-based teams to provide the full, accurate and timely accounting of program funds
- Supervises, guides and mentors subordinates in the DC office
- Supports measures to fill staff vacancies and recruit staff and consultants
- Monitors political developments in Afghanistan and the broader Asia region
- Acts as liaison with members of NGO, funding and Washington policymaking communities, and serves as NDI representative at external events and assists with NDI's public outreach
- Works with Asia-Pacific team leadership to formulate and implement fundraising plans targeting traditional and non-traditional donors
- Supports virtual and/or in-person activities (if and when conditions for in-person travel permit) to assess and pursue program opportunities
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in International Relations or a related subject. Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis
- A minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience in international development, community organizing, political campaigns, organizational development, or legislative affairs
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively interact with all levels of staff, U.S. and foreign government personnel, members of donor organizations, funders, and policy makers
- Extensive experience managing large programs and grants funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
- Superior verbal and written communication skills in formal writing, social media channels and presentations for multiple, varied audiences
- Exceptional competency in one or more areas of NDI's functional programs, in addition to knowledge of the political and operational environment in the Asia region, including Afghanistan and Bangladesh
- High degree of organization, initiative and attention to detail
- Exceptional skills for analyzing complex program and political issues and for developing relevant and innovative program responses in fluid situations
- Superior writing skills, clear and persuasive and experienced in editing of written materials
- Experienced management and leadership skills and capable of leading, inspiring and motivating staff
- Extensive experience in program design and strategic planning
- Seasoned project financial management skills
- Working knowledge of Google Apps suite, PC-based word processing, database and spreadsheet applications
