Assistant Director, Social & Community Services

The NYC Independent Budget Office, a nonpartisan city agency, is seeking an experienced and self-motivated policy analyst to serve as an Assistant Director supervising our team of budget and policy analysts covering Medicaid, public health (including Health + Hospitals), children’s services, and other social service agencies, as well as the police, correction, and fire departments. The City Charter directs IBO to provide analyses and issue public reports on city the city’s fiscal condition and public policies and to enhance official and public understanding of such matters. This position offers a unique opportunity to study and impact public policy.

 

A successful candidate for this position will evidence a commitment to critical and rigorous analysis of public policy questions and a deep understanding of public policy analysis. The ability to manage a team of researchers, including mentoring, reviewing team members’ work in progress for accuracy and adherence to IBO standards, and editing reports and presentations is critical. The successful candidate will also be able to generate new and interesting lines of inquiry for the team’s research agenda, as well as conducting their own research.

Qualifications:

Candidates should be analytic, able to demonstrate skills in quantitative research and policy analysis, and have the ability to write clearly about complicated research and data for a wide audience of persons interested in public policy. Commitment to impartial and independent research is essential. Ability to manage the work of a team of policy analysts, take initiative and meet and enforce deadlines is critical.

 

A graduate degree in Public Policy, Administration, or a related area of social science research, along with two to five years of experience, including at least one year in a managerial or supervisory position is preferred; equivalent work experience may substitute.

 

New York City residency must be established within 90 days of appointment and is required for the first two years of city service, after which employees may reside in Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester Counties. Foreign nationals must have a valid permanent resident card (“green card”) or renewable work permit.

Salary range:

$120,000-$140,000, depending upon experience.

 

Other Information:
