Scope: The Director of Social Media & Content will be responsible for driving our values and messages to a broad set of strategic targets among national influencers and grassroots activists. The Director will lead and collaborate on brand management, narrative development, production of creative content for campaigning, organizing, and brand objectives.

This is a new role in the Digital Strategies department - we’re looking for someone who can come in and build a team and programming from the ground up. This person will manage a team of at least five people, is responsible for strategic content development, content distribution, brand management in partnership with the Communications team, and will work with influencers and other high-profile principals.

This is a senior level position that requires significant experience managing people, projects and multi-platforms to achieve successful outcomes.

We’re looking for an organized storyteller, organizer, and leader who can bring to life a people-centered content strategy highlighting the Sierra Club’s programmatic and narrative organizing work. The Director of Social Media should have a deep understanding of racial justice and environmental justice and how the two intersect. The person in this role should also be someone who is always tracking social trends, along with movement in narratives and culture trends that can help the environmental movement do the vital work of protecting people and our planet.

Job Activities:

Storytelling and Programming:

  • Build out and develop Sierra Club’s online voice -- consistent with our brand and voice guidelines -- in order to create a holistic national social media program that integrates fundraising, storytelling, and organizing tactics to achieve programmatic goals.
  • Oversee social campaign, project, and platform launches to ensure goals, promotional processes, and deadlines are met successfully.
  • Work in close partnership with other senior digital leaders on crisis communications plans and organizing opportunities using both proven and experimental online and offline tactics to help grow Sierra Club's brand reach, engagement, membership, and conversions.

People Management:

  • Develop and grow a team of strategists, creatives, and writers, creating a governance structure for our social program, management best practices, and developing long and short term strategic plans for the team.
  • Build out our emerging influencer program (relationship building, talent management, and aligning opportunities with our organizing and campaign programs)

Partnerships and Brand:

  • Work closely with the Online Fundraising team to communicate, develop and deploy successful online advertising campaigns around priority content and initiatives
  • Manage external social media content partnerships and proactively shape the public’s understanding of how environmental justice is racial justice, with the goal of demonstrating what climate leadership looks like and extending audience reach

This position directly relates to the 24-hour news cycle which will sometimes require weeknight and weekend hours.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $115,000.
  • The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.
  • This is a category 3 exempt position.

Job requirements

A successful candidate must have the following skills and experiences:

  • At least 5 years of experience growing and managing cross-platform social media programs with a large subscriber base, content strategy and design, strategic audience engagement and growth, etc.
  • Significant management experience - whether that’s large teams (10+) or demonstrated leadership experience managing people, projects, cross-functional teams, and large budgets
  • Expertise in a range of social media channels, with a proven history of adapting tactics, metrics, innovation and outcomes in line with social trends,
  • A track record of modeling effective equity analysis and practice, operationalizing equity, and embedding justice and equity throughout team/department policies, structures, culture, and programs.
  • In tune with the communities we work with, able to leverage cultural trends to generate enthusiasm, growth, and real power, and be able to convey this information through various digital media platforms.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • At least 3 years of experience with advocacy or electoral campaigns or organization management.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications and presentations skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort around interacting with other staff, external partners, organizations, and consultants.
  • Top-notch organization skills. There’s a lot to keep track of in this role, and nothing can fall through the cracks. Managing multiple priorities, timeliness, and attention to detail is key.
