POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Individual Giving is a key leadership position within the Center for Philanthropy and Institutional Advancement. At this exciting time while the Museum is in the quiet phase of an $85 million comprehensive campaign, this position will have the opportunity to shape the future of the individual giving program at OMCA. The position develops the strategy and leads the execution of that strategy for restricted and unrestricted individual giving, oversees the Museum's planned giving program, and manages two full time staff – the Individual Giving Manager (who oversees OMCA's Donor Forum program), and the Development Systems Analyst. In addition, this position will carry a portfolio of major campaign prospects. This is a unique opportunity to shape the program to align with the vision and values of OMCA, which is a leader in the field for presenting relevant, meaningful exhibitions and programs that unite us through art, history, and natural sciences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Museum's mission, values, vision, and core commitment to the visitor experience, community engagement, and institutional relevancy for the future;
  • Contribute to and support the OMCA strategic plan, annual priorities, and institutional initiatives such as diversity advancement;
  • Contribute to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, a spirit of collegiality, cooperation, and openness to many perspectives;
  • Participate in a culture of ongoing learning, collaboration, innovation, creativity, and community engagement.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Annual Fundraising

  • Develop overall strategic direction, objectives, and budget for Individual Giving
  • Partner across the department with colleagues in events, membership, foundation, and corporate giving to define a vision of individual philanthropy at OMCA that connects with our mission and creates a pipeline for donor engagement
  • Design and implement fundraising plans for exhibitions, education programs, and other special initiatives
  • Develop prospect lists and meet with major and planned gift prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward support
  • Oversee individual donor communication, including solicitation and acknowledgement letters; funding proposals and reports; and collateral and presentations
  • Manage Planned Giving program (Heritage Society) including development of promotional materials, concepts for donor events, and marketing of planned giving opportunities
  • Support the solicitation and acknowledgment of individual Trustee gifts
  • With the Director of Philanthropy, engage the Advancement Committee as they work to build OMCA's donor base and prospect pipeline

Campaign Fundraising

  • Manage a portfolio of qualified major gift prospects for the Museum's comprehensive campaign
  • With the Director of Philanthropy, develop and manage strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual donors within the context of a 5 year comprehensive campaign
  • Ensure coordinated efforts between campaign and annual fundraising for individuals, in order to create clarity and consistency for donors and internal partners, including Finance staff.

Administration

  • Provide regular reports to the Executive Team and Board of Trustees
  • Contribute to the maintenance of accurate and complete donor constituent records
  • Supervise, manage, and mentor direct reports and project team members to ensure consistency of processes across all projects, deliver exceptional results, and ensure appropriate collaboration with staff
  • Establish, monitor, and reconcile individual income goals
  • Develop and manage expense budgets for Individual and Planned Giving
  • Manage the realized planned gift and pending estate process

 

EXPERIENCE

A level of experience that demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge and abilities for this position is required as noted:

  • Experience personally cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts from individual donors
  • 7-10 years of related fundraising experience, ability to display the competencies of strategic thinking, development of self and others and ability to deploy and align organizational strategies and objectives

  • B.A. degree required in relevant field
  • Experience managing and developing staff
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area philanthropic community preferred
  • Experience in museums or other arts & culture organizations preferred
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, practices and professional standards, including donor research, moves management, and stewardship
  • Knowledge of planned giving laws and policies preferred
  • Ability to represent Museum interests with community partners, Board members, and other stakeholders
  • English language proficiency in both spoken and written form
  • Relational database experience; Raiser's Edge preferred
