Outreach and Community Engagement Specialist

ALS Therapy Development Institute has an immediate opening for an Outreach and Community Engagement Specialist to join its fast paced and passionate team. The incumbent will work with ALS TDI development, marketing and science staff to build broad based awareness and sustained support for ALS TDI research programs and educate, train and create well informed representatives from the ALS community to provide input to internal and external (i.e. governmental, industry and other foundation partners) sources. They insure that all outreach programs and messaging align with the goals of ALS TDI; highlighting our mission and scientific standards. This leader will help represent ALS TDI and identify potential supporters for ALS TDI through social media, online message boards, discussion groups and at event-based activities.

Essential Functions:

Work closely with the Chief Scientific Officer to keep up to date on ALS science and research to be able to continue to talk and engage with both lay and subject expect stakeholders about progress

Develop curriculum and conduct educational workshops (ALS Unfiltered) and outreach to various groups and organizations both in-person and via webinar format

Conduct research, analysis, and interviews to write a variety of materials such as speeches; articles for publication in professional magazines, blogs, newsletters etc

Represent the ALS community and ALS TDI at national and international conferences

Assist with telephone and email requests for community resources and referrals. In collaboration with the Development team, ensure interactions and engagement levels are entered in SalesForce

Lead and participate in local and regional ALS and patient advocacy activities

Identify and secure funding sources including community and corporate grants, sponsorships and personal/major gifts.

Collaborate with development team members to identify leads and relationships for increased revenue.

Through talks and workshops help identify, recruit, and cultivate donors and volunteers for peer-to-peer and community based fundraising events

Develop and execute plans for primary touch points for potential ALS TDI supporters


BS in biology or other related science, Master's degree preferred.

Three plus years' experience (or equivalent experience) in patient advocacy, community relations or outreach

Willingness to travel locally or regionally and work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.

This person must have exceptional presentation skills and an excellent command of the English language both verbally and in writing

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to motivate and influence others to take action

Demonstrated collaboration and communication skills in order to work effectively with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds and with different experience levels

Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and manage projects simultaneously. Must be detail oriented and able to work independently and as part of a team and with all levels of staff

Experience with computer programs, including Word, Excel and database management and publication
