Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.


Sanctuary is seeking a highly organized and charismatic Manager of Volunteer Relations to join our Development and Communications team. The Manager is responsible for Volunteer Program operations, communications, and data tracking in order to cultivate and deepen relationships with prospective and existing volunteers. They will join a dynamic Development Department and will report to the Director of Volunteer and Corporate Relations, working closely with others throughout the organization.

*This position will be hybrid through the fall (in office Tuesdays and Thursdays and remote M, W, F). Other days in the office may be required as needed.


  • Works with the Director of Corporate & Volunteer Relations to develop and implement strategies to support the growth and management of Sanctuary's Volunteer Program.
  • Manages the recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers in numerous roles across Sanctuary's departments and locations.
  • Oversees and coordinates flagship volunteer opportunities, including the Summer Legal Internship Program, Sanctuary's annual Zero Tolerance Benefit, and 'Holiday Helpers'.
  • Collects, maintains, and analyzes volunteer data. Produces reports for a variety of purposes as needed.
  • Manages, writes, and designs all online communications for Sanctuary's volunteers, including blast emails and website pages.
  • Cultivates select critical relationships (including with Board members, staff, and corporate partners) in support of the volunteer program.
  • Manages internal relationships with staff throughout the agency to identify agency needs that could benefit from volunteer support.
  • Assists in developing strategic, annual volunteer, and donor campaigns
  • Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as requested.

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years' experience or 7+ years of equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Outgoing, positive personality with very strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations (colleagues, clients, volunteers).
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills.
  • Creative thinker who enjoys brainstorming and problem-solving.
  • Willingness to work evenings and some weekends for special events and orientations.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Strong interest, comfort level, and proficiency with entering and manipulating information in databases.
  • Facility with the back-end of web-based applications.
  • Proficiency and/or familiarity with web-based tracking systems (e.g., Volgistics) a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Strong commitment to the mission, goals, and values of Sanctuary for Families
