Description

About Us

The Simons Foundation is a leading philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing the frontiers of basic science and mathematics. Through grantmaking, in-house research and public engagement, we propel scientific discovery and contribute to our collective understanding. Founded by Jim and Marilyn Simons in 1994, the foundation awards $300 million annually. Our grantmaking focuses on four areas: autism and neuroscience; life sciences; mathematical and physical sciences; and science, society and culture. The Flatiron Institute, our internal research organization, advances scientific research through computational methods, tools and analysis. Our offices are in the heart of New York City's Flatiron District.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and versatile science writer to join our Communications team. In this role, you will handle diverse writing and editing assignments ranging from news about individual and institutional grantees to the latest published research from our scientists. You will collaborate with grant managers, scientific leaders and staff throughout the foundation to highlight our mission and the impact of our work. As part of a team, you will create communications and content for multiple channels, including web, email, press outreach and social media, as well as larger projects such as the annual report.

This role reports to the director of digital communications and works closely with the senior science writer and editor. This full-time staff position requires working on-site four days a week in our New York City office. (This position does not involve journalistic work for Quanta or The Transmitter, two editorially independent publications under the Simons Foundation umbrella.)

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit a variety of content, including feature stories, press releases, email newsletters and website content, covering subjects ranging from the brain's inner workings to the universe's large-scale structure.
  • Work with scientists to understand their research and transform it into compelling narratives for both peer-to-peer and general audiences.
  • Partner with graphic artists, photographers and videographers to help determine the best way to illustrate stories.
  • Collaborate across grant-making and research teams to identify communications and storytelling opportunities.
  • Contribute to projects, including the annual report, video series and web projects.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of science writing experience or a master's degree in science writing and communications or journalism and at least 1 to 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills, along with published examples of work.
  • The ability to interpret and explain science in engaging ways for a sophisticated audience and a broader readership.
  • The ability to work on deadline and manage multiple writing assignments and projects.
  • Familiarity with academia, scientific journal publications, scientific research institutions and/or science journalism is preferred. An academic or research background in science would also be an asset.
  • Experience writing about neuroscience and/or biology is a plus, as is multimedia storytelling and data visualization experience.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The full-time annual compensation range for the Science Writer level is $85,000 – $95,000, depending on experience.
  • The full-time annual compensation range for the Senior Science Writer level is $95,000 - $110,000, depending on experience.
  • In addition to competitive salaries, the Simons Foundation provides employees with an outstanding benefits package.
