Position Summary:

The marketing & communications manager (MCM ) is in charge of key internal and external communication tools. As the primary communications representative for the Office of Alumni Relations (OAR ), the MCM is the chief content strategist for this area. The MCM advances OAR's reputation, the institution's reputation and the reputation and stories of U of I alumni, through purposeful creative and messaging tied to the university's brand and strategic initiatives. The MCM provides marketing leadership in a variety of areas, including alumni relations, web content, media and public relations and publications. The MCM provides counsel to the executive director of alumni relations and advancement communications and the director of advancement communications on marketing approaches; writes and edits a variety of marketing materials in electronic and print format including alumni magazine articles, social media and web campaigns and content, brochures, fact sheets and posters, scripts and talking points, advertisements, promotional articles and news releases; and coordinates special events and oversees the work of designers, photographers and freelance writers. The MCM works with University Communications & Marketing (UCM ) team to coordinate content and relay information to and from the OAR .

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field and 4 years of professional experience OR a combination of education and experience totaling 8 years

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Photoshop or other imaging editing program

• Experience simultaneously managing multiple deadline driven complex projects and priorities

• Experience designing, developing and managing social media content and channels using web analytics tools

• Demonstrated knowledge of basic HTML

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with advancement and development professionals, including writing proposals for solicitation

• Experience working in higher education

• Experience producing and editing marketing collateral

• Experience interviewing subjects and writing feature articles and press releases

• Knowledge of management and supervisory techniques

• Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suites

• Willingness to travel and work odd hours

• Demonstrated ability to learn/grasp new concepts quickly
