Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Adult Counselor will provide ongoing domestic violence comprehensive individual and support group clinical counseling services to non-shelter clients primarily for the African community. Assist clients to move toward managing their trauma, understanding the impact of domestic violence and other forms of gender violence, such as Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) on their lives and that of their children; help them to reach economic stability through case management, advocacy, and referral if necessary, to organizations providing such services. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts intake assessments and psychosocial interviews for primarily African survivors of domestic violence and other forms of gender violence
  • Provides crisis intervention for clients with a focus on trauma, victimization and other related issuesProvides comprehensive individual and group counseling services including advocacy, case management, and referrals primarily to the African community who are survivors of domestic violence
  • Provides affidavits and testimony for immigration and other legal purposes
  • Conducts trauma related and domestic violence outreach and training to community organizations and institutions serving the African community
  • Maintains accurate case records and utilizes internal database systems to track direct services to clients
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor




· Licensed Master's Degree in Social Work, preferred

· Ability to provide effective counseling in both English and Spanish Required

· Proficiency in multi-tasking and organizational skills are helpful

· Ability to collaborate with others and engage in teamwork is necessary.

· Familiarity with data entry and other computer programs.
