The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with Community MusicWorks in the search for a Director of Development.
The Director of Development will be responsible for the strategic planning, oversight, and execution of the Individual Giving Program, representing approximately 60% of the overall $1 million fundraising budget for the organization. The Director of Development will manage cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities, with a particular focus on leadership donors ($1,000 and above). The successful candidate will collaborate with the organization’s Institutional Relationships Manager on large and small-scale foundation, government, and corporate support fundraising efforts. The Director of Development will coordinate and collaborate on the silent and public phase efforts of the organization’s capital campaign, including the preliminary structure and strategy, as well as managing a portfolio of prospects and supporting the fundraising work of the Artistic Director, Managing Director, Capital Campaign Committee, and Board of Directors.
Founded in 1997 with the conviction that musicians can have meaningful careers that unite artistry and public service, Community MusicWorks is a community-based organization with an annual budget of approximately $1 million that builds long-term learning and mentoring relationships between professional musicians, children, and families in Providence, Rhode Island’s most diverse and underserved neighborhoods.
This is an exciting time for CMW. Now in its third decade, CMW has a strong track record of local programming—in both its educational programs and its concert season—as well as a national leadership role with music and social justice organizations that includes hosting an annual summer institute and convening a network of organizations that have been incubated by CMW. Locally and nationally it’s a time of pushing to see how the organization can grow to its next phase.
Having established itself as a pop-up organization—creating musical events and programming in underutilized spaces in the community, CMW has bought a piece of land and is preparing to build a space that will amplify its local and national reach. Through a capital campaign, CMW will be working to build a flexible and accessible space for community-building performances and instruction, as well as establishing a visible model for how concert music practice can be deeply embedded in neighborhood life.
The organization is poised for the ambitious fundraising goals ahead, having met or exceeded its fundraising goals consistently over the past three years, including a significant expansion in the individual donor program. The incoming Director of Development will play a vital role in energizing the local community to participate in the ambitious goals ahead, both in programmatic areas and in the capital project (although will not be responsible for directing the campaign).
As the organization works to align all of its practices with its social justice agenda—the Director of Development will have the opportunity to design the next phase of the development operation that fully aligns philanthropy with the mission of the organization.
