ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

Verified Voting’s mission is to strengthen democracy for all voters by promoting the responsible use of technology in elections. Verified Voting is a non-partisan organization focused exclusively on the critical role technology plays in elections. The staff, Board, and Board of Advisors consists of recognized subject matter experts on the issues of election integrity, cybersecurity, and the responsible use of technology, including several former election officials. Since its founding in 2004 by computer scientists, Verified Voting has acted on the belief that the integrity and strength of American democracy relies on citizens’ trust that each vote is counted as cast. In the ever-shifting world of election security, where new threats or challenges can emerge at any time, Verified Voting is working to guide elections toward greater accuracy, security, and verifiability. 

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Verified Voting is seeking its next CEO for its 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. In the course of completing its strategic plan, ​Validating 2020,​ Verified Voting has significantly expanded its team and programmatic capacity to address the urgent need for greater accuracy, security, and verifiability in elections. The organization is now looking for a dynamic and experienced executive to lead the Board and staff through its next strategic planning, implementation and evaluation process as it continues to fulfill its mission. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will manage a team of seventeen.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Organizational Strategy and Vision 

• Work collaboratively with the board, staff, funders, and other key partners to set the organization’s vision for the future 
• Lead the development, planning and implementation of short-term and long-term goals to achieve that vision 
• Manage the team to meet and exceed goals, as defined through the strategic planning process

Fundraising and Resource Development 

• Set ambitious and attainable fundraising goals, with the intention of expanding Verified Voting’s reach, while maintaining its commitment to quality and integrity 
• Manage and cultivate new sources of funding for the organization, working with individual and institutional donors
• Partner with the Board of Directors, engaging Board members in fundraising efforts and supporting members in ongoing stewardship of key relationships

Financial Management and Operations 

• Manage the fiscal health of the organization in accordance with the budget needs set by the strategic plan
• Present the annual budget and audit to the board for review and approval
• Serve as the key decision maker and signatory on financial matters, ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the organization

Outreach and Communication

• Serve as the leading external face of the organization, enhancing Verified Voting’s visibility and credibility
• Act as a thought leader and advocate for election accuracy, security, and verifiability
• Build and maintain positive relationships with policymakers, partner organizations, key associations, and others who can support Verified Voting in meeting its goals

Human Resources / Staff Management 

• Hire, retain, and mentor a high-performing, diverse team with a commitment to strong staff engagement, equity, and inclusivity
• Set goals and hold staff accountable for meeting and exceeding those goals; oversee, with the support of the leadership team, a robust, learning-oriented annual performance review process
• Foster a culture of respect and collaboration, in which a diverse range of staff members will thrive and feel a sense of belonging

Board Relations 

• Collaborate with the Board of Directors to support its expansion and transition to a full governance structure with effective committees 
• Communicate effectively with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions
• Work in partnership with the Board to provide leadership and vision and to develop the organizational strategies to advance the mission of the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

• A minimum of seven years of executive leadership experience, with a track record of success growing organizations in the nonprofit sector
• Experience effectively building and working with a Board of Directors 
• Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with a team that is remote; experience with digital tools and platforms that enable remote work collaborations (e.g. Asana, Google Drive, Zoom, Slack or related platforms) 
• Ability to think strategically and create long-term plans to meet specific goals, and communicate these plans and goals to staff, board, volunteers, and donors
• Strong strategic thinking skills and planning in order to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors 
• Proven experience building and managing teams; capable of recruiting, mentoring, and training Verified Voting leadership 
• Alignment with organizational values and operating principles; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to serve as an exemplar for an organization’s values and foster an inclusive and respectful workplace
• Excellent communications skills, with the ability to effectively speak to donors, the media, policy makers and the overall voting rights community
• Ability to work closely with expert technologists to understand and communicate technology and policy issues 
• Demonstrated success cultivating new revenue streams while stewarding existing funders; excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community, including comfort and familiarity with working with six- and seven-figure donors 
• Previous success in establishing collaborative and productive relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, peer nonprofit organizations, and policy makers
• Strong financial management skills, with experience managing budgets, allocating resources, and overseeing an organization with a strong finance function 
• Transparent and high integrity approach to leadership, with a high level of emotional intelligence
