We do this by delivering impactful services with measurable outcomes to children, youth, adults, and the elderly. As a civic anchor, we carry out this mission within the context of building a sustainable community for all people through the arts, environmental advocacy, and urban planning. 

Established in 1994, St Nicks Alliance’s Youth and Education strives to transform the lives of more than 6,000 North Brooklyn youth, ages 2-24, each year. Through a wide-range of programs, youth are empowered to successfully advance through the stages of education and into young adulthood with the core competencies to thrive. In partnership with schools, families and community, St. Nicks Alliance’s holistic approach to transformation combines youth development, academic enrichment, health and wellness, arts learning and post-secondary readiness. 


Job Summary

SNA’s Youth and Education seeks a full-time Deputy Director to oversee a growing portfolio of elementary, middle and high school programs. The Deputy Director is responsible for strategic leadership, operational oversight, programmatic quality and data-driven outcomes  for programs in two tracks:  Afterschool Centers and Post-Secondary Readiness, including one of New York City’s largest Summer Youth Employment Programs. She/he/they have overall responsibility for planning, development, and supervision of their portfolio consistent with organizational mission, goals, and quality standards. She/he/they will report to the Division Director and oversee two Associate Directors, who oversee program directors.  

St. Nicks Alliance’s Afterschool Centers, SNA support young people to perform well in school and develop the socio-emotional skills to thrive as adults. Toward this end, we have designed a dynamic School Success Model, that weaves together Interdisciplinary Thematic Units focused on literacy, arts learning and STEM along with reading interventions and family literacy. At the center of our work is a deep commitment to youth development and socio-emotional learning.  Subject to change, the portfolio is currently identified as 7 afterschool centers that serve more than 800 elementary and middle school children each year.  

In Post-Secondary Readiness, SNA’s Youth and Education approach focuses on empowering young people to graduate, prepare for college and the workforce, and develop the resilience to thrive as young adults. Subject to change, the portfolio currently focuses primarily on promoting high school graduation and post-secondary readiness at East Williamsburg’s Grand Street Campus, Bushwick Community High School, SYEP, Work Learn Grow, and AmeriCorps. These programs serve more than 3,900 children and youth; adults; and community members. They represent partnerships with diverse institutional stakeholders, including schools, NYCHA, city agencies, co-locators, community-based organizations, 100+ worksites and SNA Workforce division. 

The diverse funding streams include NYS-OCFS (Empire State Afterschool Program,  Advantage Afterschool Program, Settlement House Funds, AmeriCorps), NYC-DYCD (Beacon, SYEP, WLG, COMPASS High), NY City Council, and NYC DOE Learning to Work.   

The successful candidate is a seasoned leader able to envision, plan and implement a bold vision for each program, their portfolio and Youth and Education.  She/he/they must be an ambitious self-starter, able to drive toward a long-term vision, while meeting the operational needs of program.  They Deputy Director must be highly skilled at building strong partnerships, strategic thinking, creative problem solving and program development.  She/he/they must demonstrate advanced ability to build a strong team, and effectively supervise and support staff.  They must also be highly knowledgeable about vulnerable populations and the compliance requirements of our primary public funding contracts and vulnerable youth.  


Primary Responsibilities 

Leadership and Resource Development

  • Serve as a critical thought partner with the Director of Youth and Education, three Deputy Directors and five Associate Directors on strategic planning, program development and partnership development.
  • Lead the implementation of all strategic initaitives for her/his/their portfolio
  • Track and utilize data to drive decision-making and best practices
  • Help secure and ensure full compliance with all public and private funding streams.  Must be able to develop strong proposals, reports, presentations and other technical writing to support resource development


Staff Leadership and Talent Development:

  • Attract, develop, coach and retain high-performing staff, working with them to maintain consistent,  high quality project management and service delivery
  • Foster high performance of two Associate Directors (direct reports) and 12+ program directors through clear goals and expectations, regular supervision sessions, the guidance process and annual performance reviews
  • Model effective leadership and help creative a positive culture with high morale, mutual support and shared accountability for results
  • Analyze the professional development needs of individual staff and design staff development and advancement opportunities to address talent development 


Program Management and Assessment:

  • Provide vision and expertise for program design within each individual program and across the Portfolio
  • Drive high-quality implementation and assessment of all program models, as defined by public contracts and St. Nicks Alliance’s evolving models for elementary, middle and high schools 
  • Define goals and evidence-based outcomes (short and long term) for the portfolio, consistent with outcomes across Youth and Education
  • Oversee the collection, analysis and reporting of program performance data, in concert with program staff, external evaluators, and Youth and Education leadership
  • Work collaboratively with other Youth and Education leaders to support programmatic and operational cohesion across the division
  • Facilitate cooperation and collaboration among program directors to achieve consistency in vision, approach, strategies, outcomes, and service delivery across program models

External Affairs and Partnerships

  • Foster, strengthen and sustain collaborative relationships with all strategic partners, including school leadership, city and state agencies (ie. DYCD,  DOE, DOH, OCFS), other public and private funders, worksite partners and others
  • Support Associate Directors and Program Directors in establishing and maintaining positive community-level partnerships
  • Participate in organization-wide, community-wide and department-wide events; represent SNA externally on relevant task forces and committees
  • Planning & Collaboration:


Finance and Operations

  • Provide high-level budget development and management in coordination with Deputy Director, Operations, Associate Directors and Program Directors
  • Ensure all human resource, fiscal and operations policies and procedures are implemented accurately and fully 


Mandatory Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent supervisory and leadership skills with ability to set and achieve goals, hold staff and oneself accountable, and provide constructive feedback/coaching
  • Strong knowledge of DYCD and DOE compliance requirements, especially for SYEP, Beacon and SYEP contracts
  • Expertise in working with vulnerable children and teens
  • Demonstrated success in building and sustaining strong partnerships with school leadership to support school-integrated programming
  • Highly collaborative with excellent relational and communication skills
  • Ability to manage complex contracts and budgets

Highly Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Education, Social Work or related field
  • A minimum of 15 years experience in Youth Service, including demonstrated success in leadership roles
  • Deep understanding of youth development and SYEP
  • Proven track record for managing government contracts


Minimum Education Required:

Master’s degree, preferably MSW, MSEd or MPA
