Detailed Description:

To provide the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History (DAA+AH) with the necessary skills and abilities to assist the Art, Architecture + Art History (AA+AH) Facilities Manager in all aspects of the care and maintenance of DAA+AH studios, shops, labs, and equipment. To provide occasional technical assistance to students needing guidance and advice with their research projects. Operates under close supervision of the AA+AH Facilities Manager.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Art, Architecture + Art History (AA+AH) Facilities Assistant will provide assistance to the AA+AH Facilities Manager in the general maintenance and care of all DAA+AH studios, shops, labs, and equipment.


Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ensure, on a daily basis, that all studios, shops, and labs are cleaned, organized, and left in safe working condition.

• Report to the AA+AH Facilities Manager in the case that any department equipment is inoperable or not operating at full capacity.

• Conduct minor repairs to DAA+AH equipment and furniture as directed by the AA+AH Facilities Manager (refinish tables and workbench tops, minor carpentry and welding repairs to furniture, replace blades, belts, and discs on power tools, etc.).

• Maintain a weekly inventory of all consumables in the following studios: Printmaking, Wood Shop, Metal Shop, Digital Photography Studio, Darkroom, Painting Studio.

• Maintain regularly scheduled “shop” or “lab” hours in which students can access particular studios and shops outside of class times.

• Assist the AA+AH Facilities Manager in the design and construction of studio, shop, and lab furniture and other building projects.

• Provide occasional technical assistance to students needing guidance and advice with their research projects.

• Assist the AA+AH Facilities Manager in the execution of special projects.

The position requires an eagerness to acquire a working knowledge of new applications and procedures as they may arise.

 

Job Requirements:

Minimum and Preferred

• BA or BFA in Art or related area

• Minimum one year experience required as an Art student with Studio work or extensive exposure to technical Studio work

• Familiarity and interest in Contemporary Art and/or Architecture Practice preferred     

• Ability to prioritize tasks, set and meet deadlines, problem solve and make basic decisions

• Familiarity in the use of Macintosh computers, preferred


Tools and Equipment Used

Various specialized machinery and hand tools that are used in the production of art in each of the department’s studios, shops, and labs including sculpture, photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, film/video, and architecture. Examples include: metalworking tools (MIG welders, oxyacetylene rig, blacksmith forge, grinders, band saw, plate shear, plasma cutter), woodworking tools (table saw, miter saw, routers, drills, panel saw), sculpture and ceramics (electric kiln, compressor, sand blaster, potter’s wheel, professional sewing machine), photography (photo enlargers, film and digital cameras, scanners, digital photo printers, large format printers), printmaking (etching presses, letterpress, hot plate, polymer plate maker), architecture (laser cutter, 3-D printer, various printers), film/video (various digital camera equipment, various lighting equipment, backdrop system, sound recording equipment),   Macintosh OS and Apple computers.

Posting Salary:

Salary: $18.16 - $20.43 per hour
