Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.

The Project Assistant's primary duties are to provide support to attorneys who provide direct representation in matrimonial and economic justice matters including matrimonial, post-judgment enforcement or modification, child and spousal support, other family court, housing, and public benefits cases.


  • Provides Matrimonial/Economic Justice clients with court accompaniment, financial assistance grant preparation and pro-se assistance;
  • Accept referrals of potential clients from the New York State Crime Victims Legal Network (CVLN) and screen their cases for eligibility for immigration benefits;
  • Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with the CVLN to ensure victims are receiving the most comprehensive response;
  • Within the first year of their hiring, complete 15 hours of training on holistic Victim Law, including the neuroscience of trauma and its implications for legal representation of crime victims;
  • Under the supervision of a staff attorney, conducts client intakes and lethality assessments;
  • Provides litigation and administrative support to staff attorneys in Sanctuary's Matrimonial/Economic Justice Project;
  • Collaborate with other staff within the Matrimonial/Economic Justice Project to ensure client needs are addressed;
  • Facilitate clients' access to intra-agency and outside resources, administer provision of direct financial assistance and donations to clients;
  • Refers survivors of domestic and gender based violence to appropriate legal, social, and other services within and outside of Sanctuary for Families;
  • Attend CVLN meetings and collect, maintain, and report data and statistics, as needed, to CVLN administrators.


  • Bachelor's degree with demonstrated commitment to issues of gender equality preferred;
  • Proactive, efficient, accurate, and highly organized self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment; able to juggle multiple priorities;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; confident public speaker;
  • Knowledge of the legal system and its impact on individuals from marginalized communities;
  • Computer literacy (including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, and Adobe and internet research);
  • Experience with office systems (e.g. document management, filing, etc.);
  • High level of integrity and professionalism;
  • Fast learner, quick mind and capacity for hard work;
  • Fluency in Spanish or other foreign language highly preferred
