Working closely with Senior Leadership, the Board of Directors, and key staff and members, the Director, Center for Leadership and Education will play a key role in expanding Fountain House’s groundbreaking model of cost-effective and human community based-mental health programming for recovery across the country and the globe.

The Center for Leadership and Education

The Center for Leadership and Education offers education in the theory and practice of the Fountain House recovery model and develops leadership to advance the global expansion of community-based mental health treatment for people living with mental illness. Its mission is to prepare future leaders and mental health advocates to replicate and scale the humane, empowering and effective Fountain House recovery model throughout the world. The Center provides focused education, leadership and colleague training that integrates essential evaluation and research through metrics, reporting and communications.

To date, the Center has provided training to more than 2,500 colleagues, members, mental health advocates and leaders. It offers a robust array of programming that attracts mental health leaders, staff, and members from all corners of the globe.

Within the Center, Fountain House has an internet-based Learning Exchange that transforms the traditional classroom practice into a classroom without walls using video conferencing technology. The Exchange, together with the curriculum frameworks produced at Fountain House, provides the groundwork for clubhouses worldwide to join with Fountain House and its affiliate Clubhouse International in fostering the expansion of the model.

About the Opportunity

The founding Director of the Center for Leadership and Education recently retired after leading the Center for over 20 years. The Director also leads the Fountain House Training program, an international training forum for the working community approach for psychiatric recovery, currently being reproduced worldwide. The Director is the instrumental agent in the design, replication and advocacy of the Fountain House approach. Fountain House must now engage a new leader to sustain and expand the Center’s vital work.

The new Director will be an influential leader in the broader world of community mental health. Fountain House is expanding the geographic reach of the Center to provide inspiration and leadership at this moment when mental illness is at the forefront of a global health agenda. This position represents a significant opportunity for an entrepreneurial professional to have a major impact on improving the lives of a highly stigmatized and marginalized group of people living with serious mental illness throughout the world. To do this, the new Director will build on Fountain House’s renowned model and training programs to pioneer an innovative path in global scaling of a social innovation that is based on practice, and introduce within an academic setting a new field of professional practice, that of the Social Practitioner.

Reporting directly to the President, and working closely with Board of Directors, senior staff and clubhouse members, the new Director’s primary areas of focus will include the oversight of training curricula and activities, developing partnerships and collaborations, and opening new territories for building social innovation through scaling the Fountain House approach. Managing a staff of 3, the new Director will play a critical role in expanding the reach and application of the Learning Exchange through a global communication and educational network.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with partners worldwide who share common values and goals across many sectors.

• Leverage the internet-based Learning Exchange platform to strategically expand into new territories and scale the Fountain House approach based on projected sustainability and financial viability.

• Manage the staff and budget of the Center as well as oversee the management of key systems and processes to ensure effectiveness across the Center’s programs.

• In collaboration with Clubhouse International and other mental health experts and organizations, communicate a coherent and compelling vision to advance Fountain House’s essential mission to expand the reach, influence and public recognition of Fountain House.

• Worki closely with various constituents of the Fountain House community to provide oversight for the development and operation of all colleague training at Fountain House and global educational partnerships including designing, updating and publishing curricula for all training activities and ensuring that they are the intellectual property of Fountain House.

• In collaboration with the Director of External Affairs, develop innovative programming that will attract increased financial support for the Center.

• Create a new Social Practitioner profession and related evidence based training in collaboration with a university partner.

• Publish articles and establish a voice on Fountain House’s website, social media and academic conferences on mental health recovery.

• Develop and maintain regular, consistent and transparent progress reports.

Key Qualifications

• Minimum of ten (10) years of adult professional education and training experience with five (5) years of management experience leading an education and training program at an organization of comparable size and scope.

• Visionary and strategic thinker with a keen appreciation for the vital and unique work of Fountain House.

• Deep knowledge of educational theory and practice with experience in developing curricula, educational technologies, adult learning theory.

• Ability to identify educational best practices and to utilize technology as an integral learning model.

• Exceptional communications skills, including clear and persuasive writing and public speaking.

• Demonstrated ability to establish solid relationships with Board members, volunteers, and senior staff.

• Solid experience in consensus building and goal setting.

• Passion for the mission of Fountain House and the capability to effectively serve as an ambassador for the organization.

• Ability and interest to assume increased organizational responsibilities over a period of time.

• Doctorate in Education, Social Work or Public Health is preferred, but not required.
