    Position Summary

    Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is seeking a skilled planning professional to join our team. As a Parks Planner, you will play a key role in shaping the future of Portland's parks and recreation system by leading a variety of planning initiatives. You will be responsible for projects that span policy development, master planning, feasibility studies, trail planning, acquisitions, and long-range plan development. In this position, you will support the Bureau's mission of promoting inclusion and diversity, particularly through community engagement and outreach to Portland's diverse communities.The ideal candidate will have strong project management skills, a general knowledge of parks and trails planning, and the ability to work collaboratively across City departments. You will represent PP&R in city-wide and regional planning efforts and be a key player in the integration of park proposals into broader urban planning frameworks. This position may also involve assisting with PP&R's Capital Improvement Plan, strategic planning efforts, and the preparation of grant applications.Join us in shaping the future of Portland's parks and ensuring they remain vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable spaces for all residents!

    What you'll get to do:

    • Lead and contribute to long-range park planning initiatives including master plans, trail studies, and park acquisitions.
    • Collaborate with recreation and natural area field operations staff on park proposals and community projects.
    • Conduct community outreach and implement involvement plans to ensure diverse voices are represented in planning processes.
    • Support environmental and inclusion goals within PP&R by integrating sustainability and equity principles into all planning efforts.
    • Represent PP&R in city-wide and regional planning efforts, and provide expert advice on park use, land use, and planning issues.
    • Assist with strategic planning, capital improvement plans, and the preparation of grants to support park development.

    To Qualify The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

    1. Experience conducting park or recreational facility planning, including policy development, master planning, trail alignment studies, or strategic planning.
    2. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse communities and implement community involvement plans, ensuring inclusive public engagement processes.
    3. Knowledge of parks and recreation planning principles, with the ability to apply these to park and trail design, as well as long-range development plans.
    4. Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, ensuring timely completion while adhering to sustainability and inclusion goals.
    5. Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and practices to complex park and recreation planning projects.
    6. Ability to work with and process quantitative data, analyze and assess qualitative data, interpret community input, draw conclusions, and make sound recommendations to decision makers.

    Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:

    • A background in city, urban, or regional planning, landscape architecture, engineering, or a closely related field.
    • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification
    • Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) and other related tools to develop park plans, analyze data, and create effective visual presentations.
