Founded in 2001, the Women’s International Network for Guatemalan Solutions (also known as WINGS Guatemala or Asociación Alas de Guatemala) provides quality reproductive health education and services to underserved, primarily rural Guatemalan youth, women and men. Our holistic approach to reproductive health recognizes that diverse barriers to exercising those rights exist at the local level. WINGS engages community members, including indigenous women and girls, to secure their reproductive rights and bring their voices to the forefront of the decision-making process. Working in predominantly rural, indigenous, and low-income departments in Guatemala, WINGS provides education and services through a network of Youth Leaders, volunteer health promoters, mobile units, and stationary clinics.

WINGS’s theory of change is rooted in the belief that provision of contraceptive methods and sexual health/reproductive health education empowers youth, women, and men to lead healthier lives and have healthier families. Specifically, prevention of unintended pregnancies leads to myriad personal and societal improvements including decreased malnutrition, decreased maternal/infant deaths, increased education/school attendance, decreased family violence, increased job opportunities, decreased environmental impact, and decreased forced migration.

WINGS initially supported contraceptive services to a handful of indigenous women starting in 2001. After 20 years of work, our team currently reaches about 20,000 people annually in fourteen of Guatemala’s departments. Since our founding, information and counseling services have reached over 320,000 women, men and youth, and prevented 297,000 unplanned pregnancies, and 1,669 infant and 106 maternal deaths (Marie Stopes calculations). Our accessible, rights-based service provision has created a new model for reproductive health care access for many thousands of vulnerable Guatemalans. WINGS is headquartered in Antigua, and its programs are implemented via three stationary clinics, three mobile units and four satellite clinics.

WINGS prides itself on being an organization where all team members have a voice and are empowered to use it. We believe that our most significant asset is our employees, and as such we invest in both their personal and professional development and wellbeing.  At WINGS, human (soft) skills are given the same priority as technical (hard) skills, and staff members benefit from a continuous cycle of feedback, which promotes a highly effective and committed team.
