Specifically, we:

  • Provide strategic and focused coaching for leaders and boards aligned to the unique needs and goals of the school or school system, including support for the return to in-person learning;
  • Develop and help implement high-impact and proven instructional coaching strategies and professional development to increase student achievement and ensure equitable and effective support for all learners;
  • Support school leaders in building positive school cultures, including strong socio-emotional supports and student and family engagement;
  • Strengthen organizational performance through enhanced processes for budgeting, staffing, scheduling, compliance, and other operational priorities;
  • Work with school leaders and stakeholders to identify each school’s strengths and challenges and create data-driven action plans and operational road maps for change;
  • Provide data analysis and coaching aimed at helping schools to more effectively utilize academic and culture data to ensure the needs of all students are being met;
  • Facilitate long-term capacity building, strategic planning, and turnaround initiatives;
  • Recruit high performing teachers and leaders for PK-12 and Adult Ed schools;
  • Support planning, development, and financing of facilities projects.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The School Improvement Leadership Coach supports school leaders at partner schools with the dual aim of developing individual leaders and reaching the school’s academic and organizational performance goals. We are looking to add one or more School Improvement Leadership Coaches to our team with expertise in elementary and secondary school leadership.

A School Improvement Leadership Coach conducts in-person coaching sessions on site at partner schools across Washington, DC, and participates in TenSquare team meetings at the office and via Zoom. This role may be part-time or full-time depending on the ideal candidate’s preference.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as strategic coach to designated K-12 school leaders, focused on executing school improvement initiatives that meet charter goals and board-approved academic and non-academic performance outcomes.
  • Advise school leaders as they guide their campuses’ return to in-person learning in a post-COVID environment.
  • Develop the primary school leader’s ability to set the school-wide vision, identify achievement goals, and manage teachers and staff toward achieving the vision and goals. 
  • Build the capacity of school leaders through regular coaching and strategic planning sessions.
  • Facilitate school improvement leadership meetings, ensuring the leadership team is focused on defined outcomes.
  • Advise on school-wide professional development and daily programmatic operations. 
  • Analyze school data and support school leaders in interpreting and using data to drive decisions and lead performance. 
  • Contribute to written updates to client boards, as requested. 
  • Inform the evaluation of school leadership.
  • Advise and support talent-sourcing for the school.
  • Support the day-to-day school program, as needed 

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications: 

Educational Background and Work Experience 

  • Results as a leadership coach or school leader including but not limited to roles as an Executive Director/Head of School, Principal, or Director-level administrator;
  • Experience leading high performing schools with a deep understanding of academics, school culture, student development preferred; 
  • A proven track record of raising student achievement, preferably in high-need schools or with high-need student populations;
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, required; Master’s degree preferred.

Skills and Characteristics 

  • A results-driven approach to school leadership and student outcomes;
  • An unwavering commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion; 
  • Proven ability to facilitate teams and manage leaders toward concrete outcomes;
  • Experience coaching school staff to instructional excellence; 
  • Keen knack and finesse with leading adults to high performance and outcomes; 
  • Strong familiarity with the Common Core standards;
  • Comfort analyzing, synthesizing, and prioritizing data to solve problems and develop strategies to achieve ambitious academic goals; 
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills; 
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • A demonstrated passion for advancing educational opportunities in low-income communities; knowledge of the charter school movement, a plus.
