Urban Advantage Elementary Manager


The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Gottesman Center for Science Teaching and Learning brings together in one organizational structure all the Museum's activities directed towards K-12 schools and teacher education. Urban Advantage is a partnership program in science education that involves eight New York City science-rich cultural institutions and currently serves over 320 public schools, and over 950 science teachers in grades 3 through 8. This position will directly supervise one or more staff at AMNH and work collaboratively with a team of professionals from several of the UA partner institutions across New York City to provide comprehensive science educational supports to participating schools, including designing and facilitating innovative professional learning programs for administrators, parent coordinators, and teachers who teach science to grades 3-5. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Co-designing and co-facilitating professional learning courses for UA grade 3, 4, 5 classroom and cluster teachers that support implementation of authentic scientific exploration, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and that model strategies for integrating science with literacy.
  • Managing collaboration among diverse UA partner institutions contributing to the elementary UA program.
  • Supervising one or more staff at AMNH who are assigned to the elementary UA program and/or possibly other areas of UA.
  • Overseeing the voucher program and the distribution of supplies and equipment to elementary schools and teachers.
  • Visiting UA elementary schools and classrooms to provide support and to monitor program implementation.
  • Communicating with UA principals and parent coordinators to disseminate program information about the program.
  • Maintaining records and files on program components and producing regular reports.
  • Collaborating with other UA staff to design and implement other professional learning programs as needed.
  • Completing other duties as assigned by the Director of the Gottesman Center, the UA Program Director, and direct supervisor.
  • Attending and participating in monthly partner meetings, weekly elementary team meetings, and other meetings as determined.
  • Co-managing the UA Lead Teacher critical friends' group/professional learning community.
  • Working with AMNH Gottesman Center staff of professional learning for non-UA teachers, support and participate in AMNH and Gottesman Center events as determined.



Required Qualifications:
Experience teaching elementary level literacy and/or science. Minimum of a Bachelors degree in education or a related field. Knowledge of city, state, and national learning and performance standards in science. Ability to effectively collaborate on multiple projects with colleagues across the partnership. Exceptional organization and time-management and skills; excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as being proactive and able to work independently. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite; excellent written and oral communication skills. The ability to work with confidential data and demonstrate discretion in all interactions is required. Availability to work some weekends and evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:
Three or more years of experience teaching elementary level literacy and/or science and 2 years of experience developing and implementing teacher professional learning programs. Masters Degree (completed or in process) in Science or Education. Current teaching license. Experience developing and facilitating adult professional learning. Knowledge of NYC elementary schools, particularly in the area of science teacher professional learning and classroom science instruction. Knowledge of informal science institutions. Familiarity with Moodle or similar online learning platforms and online teaching tools such as Nearpod, Canvas, Kahoot, etc.
