Description

UsAgainstAlzheimer's (UsA2) seeks a creative, agile Chief Development Officer (CDO) to provide big-picture strategic leadership as well as day-to-day management and implementation of all fundraising efforts. In addition to strategy and management, the CDO will be a critical member of UsA2’s bench of fundraisers, leading major solicitations and individual donor engagement. UsAgainstAlzheimer’s is an entrepreneurial organization that welcomes candidates with outside-the-box thinking and experience.

The Organization

UsA2 is a relentless force committed to ending Alzheimer’s disease by 2020.  We seek and advance strategies to increase funding for Alzheimer’s disease research and treatment; catalyze innovation in the drug development pipeline; and enable accessible and affordable diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. We make meaningful connections for caregivers through research and care resources. Driven by the suffering of millions of families, UsA2 [and its partner 501(c)4 organization, UsA2 Action] is pressing for greater urgency from government, industry and the scientific community in the quest for an Alzheimer's cure—accomplishing this through effective leadership, collaborative advocacy and strategic investments.

UsA2 embraces urgency, creativity, inclusiveness, and flexibility as we pursue our goals to:

  • Increase public and private resources for Alzheimer’s research
  • Increase the speed, efficiency and diversity of clinical trials
  • Increase attention to brain health to delay onset of Alzheimer's and increase early detection, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's
  • Include insights and preferences of individuals living with AD and their care partners in drug development, regulatory and Medicare decisions
  • Help advance national care goals and policies in support of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their care partners
  • Mobilize Americans to demand a cure and improve the quality of life of families experiencing the disease
  • Assure focused attention to AD’s disparate impact on women & minorities
  • Founded in 2011, we set a lofty goal to stop Alzheimer’s by 2020, and we are aggressively pursuing a cure through multiple channels. Governed by a five-member Board of Directors, we have a $6M budget and a staff of eight. For more information, see usagainstalzheimers.org.

The Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to UsA2’s President and working closely with our Board Chair and Co-Founder, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and lead UsA2’s fundraising efforts. The CDO will champion the organization’s revenue growth, including designing, leading and orchestrating the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy. S/he will manage a virtual, contractual development team of 4 professionals focused on major gifts, corporations, and event fundraising.

In addition to advancing a comprehensive and integrated Fundraising Plan, the CDO is also accountable for managing development operations including the development of best-practice processes for research and database management. The CDO will focus on sustaining and growing the existing base of supporters: individual and major gifts donors; corporate partnerships, events, and sponsorships; and foundation fundraising. Priority responsibilities for the new CDO include:

  • Individual/Major Donors:
  • Creating and leading a system for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of UsA2’s key current and future donors, with a focus on establishing a pipeline of new major donors.
  • Envisioning a national strategy to educate and engage prospective donors (major donors/high net worth individuals), with a robust plan of ongoing engagement.
  • Leading the events team in supporter cultivation for our annual National Summit, annual Out of the Shadows dinner, and other events created to support development activities.
  • Corporate Development:
  • Leading the corporate development team in the expansion of corporate partnerships
  • Leading the events team in the cultivation of corporate sponsorships for key events
  • Foundations:
  • Creating a development program focused on institutional foundations, through which support for our work on gender, racial and ethnic disparities can be significantly expanded.
  • Other: Working with the UsA2’s network leaders and program staff to leverage the organization’s innovative programming, publications and convenings for development.

UsA2 currently uses eTapestry and Salsa databases to support our development efforts.

The Ideal Candidate

UsA2 seeks a professional with the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ diverse fundraising and leadership experience, including documented success leading a team, setting a strategic course, executing against that path, coordinating multiple fundraising pipelines, and managing a wide array of development functions (individual/major gifts, social media, corporate partnerships, special events, foundations, etc.);
  • Track record of setting and reaching ambitious fundraising goals;
  • Proven success identifying, researching and choreographing major gifts prospects from new and current sources (individual, foundation and corporate), including making and closing asks;
  • Knowledge of and relationships with potential corporate, individual, and/or foundation space with a focus on health programming, including access and health equity, a plus;
  • Alzheimer’s knowledge and relationships preferred.
