Background

Liberation Programs is one of Fairfield County’s leading behavioral health organizations specializing in treatment for all types of substance abuse including alcohol, opiates, depressants and stimulants. The organization provides services for adolescents, men, women and their families who suffer from addiction and substance abuse. Its intensive inpatient and outpatient work is grounded upon science-based treatments and is carried out in various programs such as: Health Education, Mental Health Services, Medication Assisted Treatment, Family Therapy, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Support, Older Adult Services, Vocational Assistance, and permanent supportive housing for families.


In operation since 1971, the organization serves more than 2,300 individuals per year with a dedicated staff of over 100 and a $10M annual budget.


Select Programs and Services offered by Liberation Programs Include:

Outpatient Services:

  •  Liberation’s Outpatient services are focused on helping each person maintain their recovery for life. Last year, the Stamford Clinic served 895 individuals, both men and women. The Bridgeport Clinic served 945.

Inpatient Services:

  • Families in Recovery Program (FIRP) a 10-family, short to long-term program in Norwalk welcomes pregnant and parenting women and their children to keep the family together during treatment.
  • Liberation House offers a long-term program in Stamford for 65 men that provides counseling and connections to community resources and support groups. The internal Recovery Employment Program helps men transition to permanent housing and jobs once they complete treatment.


Residential Services:

  • Gini’s House and Cherry Homes offers 24 units of permanent housing for families at risk of homelessness and in need of help maintaining their mental health and/or recovery.


In addition to its treatment programs, the organization works throughout Fairfield County in counseling and education of substance abuse and prevention with children and their families through active programs in middle schools and high schools in the area.

Position

Liberation Programs seeks a seasoned executive with demonstrated leadership ability and experience in helping organizations grow to scale. Knowledge and expertise in strategic planning, fundraising, communications, operations, and management as well as a strong entrepreneurial vision are important to the success of this position.  Nonprofit leadership experience would be very helpful.


The Chief Executive Officer reports to and is accountable to the agency’s Board of Directors. Professional leadership is an integral component of the position. The CEO will ensure the organization is properly staffed at all levels to secure the sound operation of Liberation Programs. The CEO is also ultimately responsible for driving an internal culture of team collaboration, transparency, accountability, positive communications and dedication to best practices for its clients.


The CEO must be a strong manager willing to get his/her hands dirty in order to stay on top of all aspects of managing operations, including fundraising, but with a primary focus on making the programs as efficient and effective as possible while guiding Liberation Programs to the next level. The role requires a dynamic leader able to build upon the organization’s existing strengths while also embracing and driving change when necessary.

The CEO is expected to be a leader and resource to the Board and staff in addressing Liberation Programs’ opportunities and challenges. The CEO must be a strong communicator in groups and with individuals, able to interpret issues clearly, and effectively persuade others in a manner that leads to agreement and action. 


The Board seeks a CEO skilled at diversifying an organization’s revenue stream. The ability to think creatively about new program development and to be entrepreneurial is being sought. It is expected that the CEO will spend a significant amount of their time working externally to increase awareness and recognition of Liberation Programs’ work that will result in growth in private and public support. It is expected that the CEO will be deeply involved in working with the Board and Chief Development Officer in its fundraising efforts.


Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and management for staff in the development and implementation of Liberation Programs’ plans. Set goals and strategy with staff. Review and evaluate progress and implementation.
  • Ensure sound management of all Liberation Program facilities.
  • Ensure the sound financial management of the organization and oversee the preparation of reports, records and other documentation as requested by the Board.
  • Recruit, motivate, deploy and supervise a professional team that can effectively carry out the organization’s programs.


Revenue Development

  • Work with the Board to develop and refine a plan that will diversify the organization’s revenue stream from government, foundation, corporate, and individual sources.
  • Create significant earned income opportunities that can succeed by leveraging the organization’s reputation and skill in behavioral health and addiction treatment services.
  • Interact effectively with state and federal agencies to secure continued funding necessary to support and grow Liberation Programs’ programs.
  • Work closely with the Chief Development Officer in developing and implementing an integrated financial resource development model.


Board Development

  • Be proactively involved in building and maintaining a strong governing board that can provide technical expertise and oversight of the organization.
  • Work effectively with the Board and its committees to maximize their efforts. Ensure that meetings are properly arranged, organized, and conducted productively. Work with leadership to develop the skills and knowledge required to build agreement on issues.
  • Serve as professional advisor and resource to the Board in all areas of programs, development, finance, policy, and governance.
  • Take a leading role in helping board members maximize their personal capacity and networks to be effective fundraisers in the community.


Community Development and Public Outreach

  • Provide leadership for the cultivation of productive relationships with elected leaders, government agencies, media, and corporate leaders.
  • Ensure that the organization’s story, message, program success and positions are effectively developed and disseminated to the appropriate communities.
  • Establish productive relationships with other nonprofit organizations in the health or human service sector with the objective of creating mutual collaborations on new program development.


Qualifications

Professional

  • At least 10 years progressive senior level management and organizational leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of performance excellence in a multi-faceted institution. Successful prior experience within a comparable highly regulated industry preferred.
  • Nonprofit leadership experience would be very helpful.
  • Understanding of and successful professional experience in all areas of fundraising, planning, and implementation.   
  • Strong leadership skills with a philosophy and style that encourages creativity, growth, collaboration, problem solving, open communication, and accountability. 
  • Proven effectiveness in serving as a spokesperson and representative with funders, community leaders, government officials, the media, and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional leadership, supervisory, and team-building skills in an environment that calls for a true respect and belief in the mission of Liberation Programs. 
  • Track record of building and motivating a Board of Directors.
  • Financial management experience (budget development and management).
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree preferred.
