In line with our mission, the Swearer Center is hiring an Assistant Director of Communications and Public Engagement. In consultation with the Director and Senior Assistant Director of the Swearer Center, this position provides focused, strategic, and high-level communications and public relations support to the Swearer Center as a whole, and is responsible for four key responsibilities:
1) Internal/external communications strategy;
2) Content generation and management;
3) Public engagement and external relations;
This position also provides leadership to Swearer’s Operations / Communications team, and supervises the Communications Coordinator and several student workers.
- 1) The Assistant Director develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive and strategic annual internal/external communications and public engagement strategy plan to engage diverse audiences locally, nationally, and around the world including: students, faculty, community partners, academic institutions, donors and foundations, alumni, leaders and organizations in the field (Ashoka, Campus Compact), and media. This position evaluates communications activities in support of Center’s communications plan.
- 2) The Assistant Director is responsible for the development and management of all Center marketing and promotion, including creating, editing, and disseminating publications, reports, website, social media, newsletters, and print materials. This position generates original content (online and print) that engages diverse audience segments (public, professional and academic, among others). This position also develops, implements, and manages content generation mechanisms and systems for collecting, editing, and publishing content from Center stakeholders.
- 3) The Assistant Director is the primary liaison with Brown University’s Government and Community Relations and Communications Offices to coordinate efforts, ensure strategic alignment, share information, and promote Swearer events, activities, and accomplishments in alignment with core University messaging and priorities. This includes: serving as a key contact with the media for Center-specific activities and initiatives; representing the Center in the community (public events on and off campus); identifying high priority and strategic opportunities for co-sponsorship; and preparing the Director and senior staff for events.
- 4) The Assistant Director is responsible for the strategic design of major Center events (i.e. Swearer Engagement Fair, Family Weekend, Commencement, donor events , etc.), and for building campus participation in events that showcase the Center’s work.
Education and Experience:
· A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a closely related field; advanced degree preferred.
· 5-7 years of related experience in marketing or a closely related field.
· Or equivalent combination of education/experience.
· Demonstrated record of leadership and accomplishment in the field of communications, marketing and public affairs.
· Experience in a college or university setting, non-profit service organization, or the private sector related to marketing and public affairs.
· Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a dynamic high paced setting. Ability to work independently.
· Strong organizational, administrative and time-management skills, plus meticulous attention to detail.
· Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, technical and academic writing skills, and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to elicit and communicate information in a clear, informative and concise manner.
· Ability to provide information in a variety of formats and media to promote the Center to various stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
· Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve and prioritize in a pressured environment; Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities.
· Experience with event planning.
· Excellent computer skills in word processing, email applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google environment, mail), and spreadsheet/database management (including contact and education management databases like GivePulse and Salesforce).
· Experience with website maintenance (Drupal), newsletter creation (MailChimp) and social media (like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Loomly, and ) strongly preferred.
· Demonstrated skills in web, digital, and print design (including, for example, Canva) and audio and video production and storytelling. Photography experience a plus.
· Ability to meet a flexible work schedule, including some evenings and/or weekends and holidays.
· Ability to travel and/or participate in meetings, conferences, and other related activities.
