The public safety performance project (PSPP) was launched in 2006 as an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts. The project advances fiscally sound, data-driven policies and practices in the criminal and juvenile justice systems that protect public safety, hold offenders accountable, and control costs. The senior associate, based in Pew's Washington, DC, office, supports the project's criminal justice research portfolio. The ideal candidate has an educational and employment background in research, public policy, or a related field, knowledge of the justice system, experience working with federal data collections, state administrative data, and work experience undertaking projects involving many partners, complex issues, and extensive writing. The position reports to a manager, research and has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.
- Work with project staff to identify the most salient issues for the project's criminal justice research portfolio, including new lines of work on jails and community supervision. Based on that agenda, produce rigorous and timely research in collaboration with project staff and external partners.
- Support the design and execution of policy and program evaluations in selected states.
- Support the design and execution of national studies that analyze criminal justice trends across the states.
- In collaboration with the policy and partners teams, create the briefs, factsheets, infographics, and other documents that are highly relevant to policy deliberations and easily digested by policy makers, media, and the public.
- Follow quality control processes that ensure all research products meet the highest standards of rigor and accuracy.
- Work closely with communications staff to implement effective dissemination techniques, including written products, data visualizations, online communications strategies, and convenings.
- Maintain a working knowledge of criminal justice policy research and practice, including participating in conferences, seminars, and professional development activities.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- At least four years of relevant experience in criminal justice research and policy analysis, with a demonstrated knowledge of at least one of the following areas: sentencing/courts, community supervision, or corrections.
- Possess strong quantitative skills and experience with statistical software packages such as SPSS, SAS, and/or STATA.
- Experience with state sentencing and corrections data (e.g., courts, probation, prison, jail and parole) and experience working directly with state policy makers, corrections officials, researchers, and other criminal justice stakeholders is strongly preferred.
- Ability to express ideas, thoughts, and concepts clearly and concisely in a compelling way, in writing, data visualizations, and oral presentation.
- Demonstrated time and project management skills, including an ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to think strategically and creatively, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time, remain attentive to details, and identify resources for projects.
- Strong political awareness and nonpartisan perspective and approach.
Monthly domestic travel, on average, for conferences and/or meetings.
