Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Washington, D.C. (RMHCDC) has been serving families in the Greater Washington, D.C. area for 35 years. Our mission is to ease the hardship of children’s illness on families. We do this through three core programs (RM Houses, RM Family Rooms, RM Care Mobiles) that focus on the critical needs of children, celebrating the diversity of the donors who make them possible, staying true to our heritage of responsible stewardship, and operating with accountability and transparency.


The Position

Reporting to and in partnership with the CEO, the Vice President, Development & Marketing is responsible for the development of all fundraising and marketing strategies to grow the base of philanthropic support and increase public awareness of RMHCDC. S/he will set the organization’s strategic fundraising agenda to achieve and exceed its revenue goals through the solicitation of individual, corporate, foundation support, and grants. The VP will oversee a team of five and will work in conjunction with the Director of Marketing & Community Engagement to build and manage the brand identity and all aspects of the marketing communication to raise awareness of the charity and its programs throughout the Washington, DC area. 


A successful candidate will be passionate about our mission and the families we serve. S/he will work with a variety of volunteers, including board members, who support and help the organization, and will be sensitive to the needs and passions of a diverse staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities



  • Create an annual comprehensive development plan, in collaboration with the CEO, with targeted goals, objectives, methods, quantifiable outcomes and timelines which will achieve budgeted goals
  • Lead specific cultivation and solicitation activities for a portfolio of prospects, including foundations, major gifts, corporate sponsors and other types of philanthropic partnerships
  • Create an environment across the charity that nurtures major gift fundraising
  • Work with the CEO to engage and inform the Board of Directors on development activities
  • Oversee all aspects of the development department including strategy, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, reporting, and communications with donors



  • Work with the Director of Marketing & Community Engagement to develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy that includes events, media relations, press releases, social networking, website, newsletters, and branding
  • Grow positive awareness of the charity and strengthen its reputation with families, funders and the communities we serve



  • Oversee the Director of Marketing & Community Engagement and the Business Development Officer



  • 10+ years of development experience with at least 5 years in a management/leadership role
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, major gift solicitations, procuring foundation grants, and/or corporate sponsorships
  • Experience with annual funds, major gifts, and campaign planning and implementation
  • Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused)
  • Exceptional communication skills, including verbal, written and presentation formats
  • Experience with nonprofit marketing and social media
  • Experience in budgeting, planning, and staff and project management
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in donor management software
  • Experience working with volunteer boards and teams to achieve objectives
