40 hours/week, 9 weeks

UCLA Recreation is pleased to announce ten summer internship opportunities geared towards applicants interested in entering into the field of collegiate recreation and related fields. Selected interns will gain firsthand experience in a comprehensive recreation program at one of the most dynamic universities in the country. General responsibilities include but are not limited to program development, administrative operations, and special projects for both the department and in a specific functional area.

The Aquatics Intern will be to provide additional support for the aquatics operations and program staff, particularly through facilitation of aquatic certification courses. Duties will include facility operations, staff training and development, aquatic event and programming management.

The Aquatics intern will also have the opportunity to work on the following projects:

  • Staff training & development - The Aquatics Intern will have the opportunity to facilitate @ least 3 trainings/certification courses for new and returning staff in addition to facilitating monthly in-service training for the lifeguard staff
  • Junior Lifeguard Program - The Aquatics Intern will assist the Aquatics Coordinator and Aquatics Program Coodinator with the facilitation and coordination of our Junior Lifeguard program. They will have the opportunity to work with our Youth & Family Programs unit on this project
  • Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Policy & Procedure Manual - Develop administrative manual for UCLA LGI's including instructor expectations/responsibilities, lesson plans, etc.
  • Integrated Trainings - Research, create, and develop integrated trainings to improve cooperation between aquatics, facilities, programming, and front desk staff
  • Staff Recruitment & On-boarding - Evaluate recruitment and on-boarding procedures of all aquatic staff

The Aquatics Intern will need a minimum of:

2 years years lifeguarding and 1 year leadership (campus or workplace) experience

OR

3 years lifeguarding experience

AND  the following certifications:

Current American Red Cross Lifguard/Fist Aid/CPR/AED

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (must be obtained prior to the start of the internship)

Benefits

Each intern will actively participate in a comprehensive Collegiate Recreation Internship program with opportunities such as professional networking, comprehensive and experiential learning and an increased understanding of how a large college Recreation program operates.  Each intern will be paid $175 per week, plus a full University Housing and a University Dining meal plan (the housing and meal package is estimated at $3800 and is treated as taxable income by the IRS.)

The goal of our summer internship program is to foster the development of emerging professionals by immersing them in a diverse and fast-paced recreation programming. Ten interns will live together in university housing for a duration of 8 weeks and will gain professional experience in a variety of areas within UCLA Recreation.

 

10 Positions are available within the following areas of focus:

  • Aquatics
  • Competitive Sports
  • Facility and Special Event Management
  • Marketing
  • Youth Programs/Summer Camps 
  • Training, Development and Administration               

Required Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • First Aid/CPR Certifications (Required by the first day of employment)
  • Submit to a criminal background check.
  • Experience working in a recreation department and/or related field. 
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills and a strong desire to learn
  • Willingness to work variable and extended hours.
  • Legally Allowed to work in the United States

Each functional area may require additional certifications and/or specific skills.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Currently working in recreation and/or related fields, and actively pursuing a career within that field.
  • Entering the final year of completing an undergraduate degree or currently pursuing a graduate degree
