    Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC) is a national nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. Our mission is to eliminate barriers to treatment of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Since our founding in 1998, TAC has partnered with grassroots advocates to pass impactful legislation in 34 states and at the federal level to improve conditions for people with severe mental illness and their families. We support compassionate civil commitment laws that enable timely and effective treatment and prevention of the criminalization of mental illness.

    Position Overview:

    Join TAC and take a hands-on role in creating resources for advocates and stakeholders for improved understanding of treatment laws and access to court ordered medically necessary care. As a law clerk, you will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that shapes public policy and advocates for better mental health care. You will engage in statute analysis, draft essential resources, and conduct research that empowers individuals to advocate for medically necessary treatment. This internship is a part-time, 20 hours per week, remote position for up to 6 months. Individuals may work from anywhere in the US.

    Responsibilities

      • Analyze state statutes for court ordered treatment;
      • Research and draft materials for public education; and
      • Compile legal information and referral resources;
      • Other duties, as assigned, to support the Advocacy Department.

    Qualifications

      • Enrolled in graduate level law program;
      • Strong interest in mental health law and decriminalization of mental illness;
      • Demonstrated strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills;
      • Well-organized, self-directed, and able to complete multiple tasks in a timely and efficient manner;
      • Ability to organize and prioritize work;
      • Ability to work independently with little supervision;
      • Requires use of a personal computer.

    Compensation

    TAC will offer $20 per hour, no more than 20 hours per week. Internship is available for up to 6 months. Start and end date negotiable. TAC is willing to work with law school for credit in place of hourly compensation.
